Travelling to Oz in July

Hi everyone! I'm 26 and I am off travelling to oz in July. I'm starting in CAirns and working my way down to Sydney! I'm excited but nervous at same time as iv never done anything like this before and I'm doing it alone! Anyone else out there around this time?

Hey
I'm 26 heading over in July, I'm landing in Perth but I hope to be in Sydney for Christmas

Hi Karen,

I am 28 and am planning to go to Australia for the first time alone - its a really scary thought because I have never travelled on my own before! I am planning to fly over end of July/beginning of August but I don't know where to start.

I really want to go to Cairns but I wasn't sure whether to start in Cairns and work my way down to Sydney or start in Sydney and work my way up - any ideas? What made you begin your travels in Cairns?

Have you signed up to any starter packages or anything?

Leah

Oh thanks for reply girls! Leah u sound as tho your in the same boat as me! Excited but nervous at times too! Iv chosen Cairns then workin my way down coz I thought I'd follow the weather! Oz is winter in July and aug so I thought I'd spend those months in the warmer spots then get to Sydney in sept hopein it may be a bit warmer there by then! I dunno if iv done the right thing mind lol as this is the first time iv done anythin like this!

I haven't joined up for any starter packages I'm just gonna get into the hostels and hope to meet some tidy people to help me find my feet! Are you going to work out there?

Hi Karen,

I am soooo excited but also a bit nervous too but I can't wait to get out there! I think I am swaying towards the same route as you - start in Cairns and work my way around down to Sydney. I will be looking to get a 12 month holiday and work visa - definitly gonna need to work to get some more funds.

This is the first time I have ever done anything like this but I just feel like I have to do it - I have been on loads of forums and blogs and lots of people have touched down first in Cairns so it can't be that much of a bad idea and you are right about the weather!

I am looking to head out in August - when in July are you going?

I was thinking of doing a 2 day starter package because they deal with setting up your bank account, tax details, sim card and they say they can help you with jobs - but i'm not sure if this is a bit of a rip off I could probably do it all myself but because I have never been there before I am doubting my ability lol!

Leah

I'm flying out on 23rd of July so think il stay in Cairns for a week to settle and get over the jet lag then start my journey down! I'm gonna book Gray hound bus tickets but think il ask on here if they r the best company to travel with first! U gonna stay in hostels??

Yeah i was looking into bus tickets as well for travelling down, thats what i was thinking just ask when you get there to find out what the best tickets to get are. I think im gonna do a 2 day starter package and they sort out hostel accomodation for you for the first 2 nights; i will be staying in hostels - have you heard of any that are meant to be good in Cairns?

Hi there ladies.
I thought I would join in your chat as I am also travelling to Australia but will be starting in september in melbourne working my way up to Sydney for christmas and Cairns eventually.
Maybe we will cross paths

Well look here I am again!

Don't bother with the starter package. Actually I don't even know what that is, but from what you said, it seems like a waste of money. You can walk in a shop just like in the UK and buy a sim. Same with a bank account, just choose your own bank and walk in and open an account. You can do it in about 30 mins. Accommodation you can find yourself. I already gave you a tip in that other post if you want free accommodation and food.

Look at the reviews of the hostel booking sites, both on this site and others that are out there. Gilligans seems to be a good party one, The YHA is usually a bit cleaner and mellow. Then there are some really nice small friendly ones. There is even a woman's only one. If you book it yourself you can contact them right before you go and ask if they need cleaners, then you get to stay for free.

Hey guys, im in cairns at the minute, ive been in oz for nearly 4 months and cairns for 6 weeks and am also travelling alone, its so much better than what u think u meet so many great people and nearly every1 is on there own! if any1 needs advice on good hostels ive stayed in a few here so can help! as for sorting tax code and bank account.. i just did it when i got here its so easy u will just pay more money letting some1 sort it for you! im working until end of july/aug n saving then im travelling down the east coast and ending up in sydney also, its the best plan as everywhere is cold now where as cairns is still warm! would be great to meet up with any1 doin the same route x
