Where in the world would you guys say is the best place to do a cycling trek? Anyone have any cycling stories to share?
Im not sure what you mean by a "trek" You mean like an off road experience or just cycling long distances? Anyway this site has loads of people doing amazing cycling adventures. I think you can look them up by country.
I have done a couple of mountain bike trips in Malaysia. They love their cycling there, and I know an American guy that rides for a charity from Chaing Mai to the Malaysian border every year. Apparently that route is becoming quite popular. I motorcycled over the Himalayas into Leh, and saw quite a few cyclists doing that route. Made me feel quite humble riding at 5,000m and just sitting there twisting my wrist while these poor bastards pedaled away!
More along the lines of covering long distances. I'm dreaming of a cycling tour somewhere nice, thought Vietnam or some place like that...
Argh, cycling/motorcycling in the Himalayas, that must be heaven. Hahaha, I'm sure they were cursing you a bit, but motorcycling across a terrain like that must also be very strenuous on your body.

Yeah motorcycling can also be strenuous. It gets you in the arms and abs on those road surfaces. Funny thing was with all the dangers of riding in India, the closest thing I came to an accident was riding round a corner, and this Kiwi came flying round the corner on his bicycle the other way on my side of the road and nearly crashed right into me head on.
On the one had I'd like to do a tour over the Himalayas on a bicycle, but on the other, those guys do nothing but eat dust all day from all the trucks. I'm not sure how much I could deal with that. But being out in that country at a bicycle pace would be amazing. I don't think people understand until they have tried it what a different perspective travel on a bicycle gives.
I met two lovely English girls in Nepal that had bought two bikes in Vietnam and cycled them through Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand, then flown with the bikes to Sri Lanka and then India and ridden all the way up to Nepal. They had only meant to ride in Vietnam, but loved it so much they just kept going.
I've known some motorcyclists who travelled around Laos, and a group of Belgians who biked in Mongolia (met them on the Trans-Siberian)
Myself, I've travelled by bicycle through northern Ontario. Highway 144 from Sudbury to Timmins was interesting: a beautiful paved highway with almost no traffic, cutting through a vast expanse of wilderness. There was a sign that said, "No gas for 96 km". Which is an hour's drive by car, but is all day on a bicycle. When you see a sign like that, make sure you have plenty of food and water, because it means there is nothing at all for almost 100 km! Not even a single house.
Anyways, there are lots of places to camp, and lots of well maintained roads, and its safe: so I'd recommend biking around Canada in the summer, if you like nature and real wilderness.

I just remembered another cycling story about two guys I met that had both cycled across Australia. One had only taken the clothes he was wearing as he needed all other space and weight saving for the water he needed to get across the huge deserts, he carried something like 40 kilos of water. The other, a slightly crazy guy from Portugal, took two 2 liter bottles of water. When He finished drinking one, he would stop cycling and sit on the side of the road, then stop the first car that came by and demand they give him water. The code of the desert says you cannot deny someone help, so everyone stops when flagged down, but he said there was a few times when he had to wait a few hours before someone came by!
