Aug/sept is about the end of the main tourist season in Cairns. If you look here you'll see there are some jobs, and lots of backpackers looking for jobs. Now is the beginning of the main tourist season. Most of the backpacker accommodations are looking for people now, but they want long term 3 month commitments. You might still be able to find jobs in backpackers in Sept where their staff have quit early.
Australia is finally feeling the hit of the GFC. But that might work in your favor. There are less backpackers coming to Aus, due to financial troubles at home and the increased cost of living in Aus, so there is less competition for the jobs out there. Crops still have to be reaped!
I think you will find work, you just have to be smart and diligent about looking. Ive met so many backpackers that say they need work, then go out boozing all night and drag their sorry asses out of bed at midday and wonder why they haven't got a job yet!
One of the best sites out there is this Its like woofers, but it costs nothing to join, and the accommodations are more laid back than the strict woofers sites. Often its just people looking for help around the house for a couple of hours, or people that just like having backpackers around to offer a different perspective. They don't offer paid work, but these are people from communities that know people. They can find you paid work, if one, they like you, two, you can show you are a good worker, three, you ask! I'd suggest joining up now and even going and doing a few days work in some of the places in the UK. Look through the listings there are some amazing places there. This will give you an idea of what to expect and also give you a couple of favorable reviews on your profile which will give you more of a chance of landing places in Aus.

I'm going to be around that area. I arrive in cairns in the 21st of August. I'm also travelling alone, I have booked into a hostel for the first week, not sure how long I will be staying in cairns for will decide once I'm out there. Plan on travelling about a bit then working my way down to Sydney for Xmas to spend it with family.

I know this post is old but I will be flying into cairns on the 4th September and will be looking for work. Apart from getting there I have no other plans. Have you booked a hostel yet? I am going to try and get work in a hostel for free accommodation. I heard that is easy enough to do in cairns. I can't wait to get by the sea and do some diving.

Me and my girlfriend are going to cairns september and will be planning on finding work there for abit until moving down the coast heading towards melbourne.
We are on a whv and first time in oz aswell, Not actually to sure why we are heading to cairns first apart from the weather being not to hot.Its good to find somone who is planning the same thing.

Thanks for your message. Yeah i'm not too sure why I choose to start off in Cairns did it as an impulse thing lol but the weather will be nice and I thought it would be nice to travel down the coast. I'm actually flying to Cairns on the 25th October; what date in September are you and your girlfriend arriving in Cairns? I am planning to travel down the coast and end up in Sydney for new years eve - bondi beach is meant to be where the party is at!! Where are you and your girlfriend staying in Cairns when you first arrive?
