First time travellingworking in Australia - help please

Hi travellers,

I am headed to Sydney September 5th for the first time on a working Holiday visa. I too am a lone traveler with no idea what my plans are...I have a friend in Sydney who i am going to stay with well i get my feet under me but then i am up for an adventure. I would definitley be interest in bouncing some ideas off each other, and maybe coming up with a route... my only defined goal is to work 3 months of seasonal work so that i can apply for another year!

Check out my profile and lets chat!

Hi Noah,

Many thanks for your reply.

I'm pleased to see i am not the only one who doesnt have an exact plan! I just want to see as much of Australia as possible whilst travelling and working but am not sure what the best route is. Do you think Sydney is a good base to start from? I want to travel to Cairns at some point but not sure whether its best to start in Cairns and work my way down or start in Sydney and work my way up? Any ideas?

That's great that you have a friend in Sydney so you can get on your feet - i might have to track you down and stay with you lol.

Cannot wait to go down under I am sick of the UK!!!

Hi
am a retired person now but have lived in Australia now for 40 years, the time of year you are coming is great, spring but still pretty cool, especially Sydney and south of Brisbane - heading up to Cairns by Dec/Jan will be hard to take as the humidity and heat will be dreadful. If you can manage it I would stay with your Sydney friend and get bearings about all things asutralian and then fly to Cairns, you will pick up the tourist season there and make your way south.

You need to be mindful of flash flooding and sudden storms when travelling in Australia in Summer (Dec- April) as they can isolate you and cut off towns in a flash, safe travelling by train and greyhound bus, backpackers here are brilliant, and you will pick up many jobs if you are friendly and will give almost anything a go.

Other options Cotton picking in western towns and you can look on websites for harvest work which is always in high demand, depending on what you want to do, the minig boom is hitting Queensland and western australia big time and workers are in high demand, check out all your working visas though! Enjoy!!

I really have no idea i just picked Sydney as a base because i know its a popular spot and have heard great things about it as far as getting jobs and having a good time. That being said i too want to see as much of Oz as i can as well. I think Jean may be a better person to ask about all thing Oz (GREAT POST!) but i would definitely be interested in connecting on fb (links in my profile) and bouncing ideas off each other. Also if your do end up in Sydney when im staying with my friend im sure you could grab a couch/floor... as i will be doing. But in any case i am super excited to get out of the states again and stay out for as long as i can lol

I am now thinking about flying from the UK to Cairns and starting off in Cairns and working my way down to Sydney - this will probably be around August; I was wondering Jean do you think this is a good idea weather wise?

Thanks for your message Jordan - I think we both like a drink lol and have to be kicked out of the bars at closing time. Are you still thinking of flying to Sydney?? Let me know what your plans are - I wish I could give you helpful ideas but I have never done anything like this before so I dont have a clue!!
