2014 Round the World Travel

Hello all,

hello Max,

I am also from England, (Bromley; dont know if you know it) and i saving hard for a round the world trip also leaving in 2014. September is when i am aiming for. I havent booked anything either and am planning to go travelling for around 6 - 9 months before going to Oz to work, then onto New Zealand and then eventaully USA before back home.

I reckon that 10 to 20 grand will be enough for you, I am planning on saving around £12 - £14 grand and topping up witha low rate credit card/loan if absolutely neccessary.

Personally, i think that your time scale will be long enough. i dont think you would need to drop any out as the good thing about travelling is that it is unexpected! You could get somewhere and hate it, so be able to spend more time elsewhere; or the other way round, you could find somewhere you love and choose to stay longer.

where are you hoping to go?

i have just finished writing down my list of countries and mapping out rough timescales and how to get there. mine are :

london - Paris (by eurostar - so cheap!)
paris - munich (train)
munich to berlin (train)
berlin - warsaw (havent decided but know i would like to go to poland)
poland - russia
travel across the whole of russia down into mongolia and end up in beijing (on the Trans Siberian Railway, commonly known as the vodkatrain - look it up it looks AMAZING!)
then down through beijing to hong kong
hong kong to thailand
thailand to india
india back to hong kong to pick up connecting flight to australia
australia - i wanna work for like 6 to 12 months depending on how i like it..
then i want a week holidaying and chilling out in fiji before going onto new zealand for 3 or so months (again easy with the length of time)

then i want to fly from new zealand to los angeles, california, then onto san fransisco and vegas and then eventually finish with a week or so in new york and then back to rainy old London town!

i hope this has roughly helped you and maybe given u some ideas of where to go to add to your list haha

Natalie

oh and by the way i am 22

and i think 12 months is easily long enough to immerse yourself in the culture of southeast asia.. i am planning on staying in thailand for a month to six weeks and i think this should be long enough tbh

i dont know though.. will be interesting to see other answers to your post

x

Hi Natalie,

Thanks for a cracking reply, I am familiar with Bromley yes, never been there though!! To be fair your plan seems incredibly similar to mine. Travel alone for a year, work in Oz after, your route and countries also.

BY the way Poland is a must, I've just got back from a trip to Poland and Ukraine and Krakow was immense. My mate has done the trans-siberian and it kind of put me off it but onto it at the same time. Sounds so intimidating but intriginly amazing at the same time so I'm also keen for that. On your own might be scary though don't you think?

Ultimately I'd LOVE to teach Scuba Diving or Snorkelling in Oz for a year after travelling - so travel, then try and get a place/job in Oz and with my leftover money (I'm a good budgeter normally!) use this to help earn my badges and what not - sounds like a dreamy lifestyle!

To be fair it's all up in the air at present but that's a vague plan

I've ordered 3 books which are highly recommended so I can draw out a full plan then.

Bar that it's just so exciting and even though it's 2 years away potentially the build up is the best bit so embrace it - time seems to fly more than ever!

Let's hope we can build our plans into something special and our paths may well cross by the sounds of our journey plans!

Any good websites you've come across yet to recommend?

Maxi

hello Max,

Don't worry, you arent missing out on anything by never being to Bromley! There's not much here really.

I know, i really want to go to Poland, Krakow and Warsaw are in the plan, probably a week each maybe.

It's interesting that your friend has been on the trans siberian, i am soooo scared to go on it. I think out of everything, that is the part i am most scared about, but i feel like if i leave it out then i will regret it. I want to travel Russia and China so thought this would probably be the best way. How comes it has put you off it? and yeah.. i am really scared to do it alone! You will have to book it as the same time as me! (ha ha) no..i would like to know someone on there but if i cant convince someone i know to come with me then alone it will have to be! i dont mind travelling alone but the trans siberian does sound really daunting and scary.. hmm we will see..

wow yeah your plan for Oz sounds really similar to mine. my auntie scuba dived the great barrier reef in the 90's and said it is a must do in your lifetime.

yeah mine is up in the air aswell but like you said it is so exciting planning it. every minute of spare time i have i am writing and researching and planning. ermm.. in regards to websites sta travel is good but aside from that i find just typing random things into google helps.

btw i have noticed that you are not allowed to advertise on this forum so the part where i mention sta travel may well be snipped out!

so you travelling alone then?

Natalie

Hello again Natalie!

My friend who I went to Poland/Ukraine with has been pretty much anywhere and everywhere you could imagine. He's a confident outgoing lad and nothing phases him in general but he said this was the most intimidated he ever felt - sitting directly opposite this giant Russian who constantly stared at him for hours on end! How off putting is that!! Made me think why would you do it but the thrill and adventure of it all sounds surreal beyond belief. We'll have to book it around a similar time if we both decide to do it! Always great to see a Brit abroad and makes you feel so much safer at times I find!

I crossed the Poland/Ukraine border via train which gave me a taste into how weird this world can actually be!!

I've been looking at working in Oz all week - stuff like fruit picking or working in and around the beach sound bizarrely brilliant but Scuba Diving/Snorkelling and teaching or showing around tour groups seems the dream job for me. I'm open to working in other countries too but Oz or even NZ seem the pinnacle - I've got a picture in my head of it and its heaven but I tell myself surely it cant be that good?!

My books come tomorrow so I'll really get onto it in the coming weeks - 24 months will fly by even if it sounds so far away

Ta for the advice, always good to hear from other like minded people wanting similar things from their next few years

I am travelling alone yes but I plan on meeting friends at various stages who are going on smaller trips to certain places I'm going to i.e Europe, US, Oz etc - like everyone says you always meet people too, all the time as we found in our recent trip!

You also on your lonesome aren't you?

Max

Heyy

oh my god really? that sounds sooo scary! I would die if that happened to me. ahh how horrible! yeah i am going on my own which i dont mind tbh. it is actually more out of choice than circumstance.

as i said before, the only thing i am worried about braving alone is the Trans Siberian, everything else i think i can deal with (i hope!) so yeah.. if i do end up booking it ill message you first (if thats ok) and maybe we could arrange to go at the same time?

as you said a brit abroad is really reassuring. especially one whos friend has already experienced that..lol..
i am hoping to book it around the end of october (i know its gonna be cold!) so yeah..

have fun reading your books and researching!

Natalie

oh..and fruit picking. YES PLEASE! lol. that sounds so amazing.. i was looking into it. haha.. and life guarding would be cool too. sitting on the beach all day pretty much woo lol

natalie

Yea don't let it put you off, go for it if you want too - sure other people on here would have advice on it and how to survive it!! Still be scary as hell though!

Yea just give me a shout if you want to chat about your/my plans and what dates we plan on going and if we cross paths we can book something up potentially

Keep dreaming, it's not far off

Maxi x

Yeah cool i will. You do the sane. oncw u have figured out your rough travel plans eg places dates months etc then let me know i know. i cant wait! Jus nees to save save save.

It will be here before we know it! How exciting haha
