Booked a tour in Egypt Sept 11 with On the Go Tours. Although my tour is only to Cairo and Luxor, I'm having second thoughts..I know it seems far away but wondering what people's opinion are and if there's anyone in Egypt now and can tell me what's it like after those 2 Americans got kidnapped this past week? Mahalo!
I'am an Egyptian and can give you a clearer opinion. Generally Egypt is very safe for tourists despite the unrest. Unrest is majorly due to people disliking what is going on on the political scene, and does not have a relation with tourism.
It is true that there some kidnapping for some tourists, but that was only in Sinai by Bedouins who had relatives in captivity and wanted to put pressure on the government, utilizing the vast Sinai desert & mountains. If you stay away from Sinai I guess you would do fine.
The REAL problem you may face in Cairo now is the electricity cut-outs. It's a daily habit now to have no electricity for an hour or two, depending on your location.
Other than that, I can assure you Egypt is very safe for tourists, especially in the south (Aswan & Luxor). Note that this particular area depends heavily on tourism. It is not easy for anyone, nor their living would allow them to threaten tourists.
Hope you enjoy your trip. And tell us what you have done when you get back...
