best ways to travel oz cheaply?

Just wondering if anyone has any good tips for traveling around australia cheaply?!

Honestly, if you're looking for cheap backpacking why did you go to an expensive developed destination? Loads of super inexpensive countries a short flight away from Australia...

Good luck with your budget.

Cheers,
Terry

Just to quote your other post about the "bondi bubble"... You said it!

Expensive country > expensive city > expensive area of expensive city > expensive accommodation style

If plan to stay and travel the first two in that equation, then definitely get out of the last two! There are cheaper accommodation options and cheaper localities. If you're travelling around look for bus passes and the like, and scope out chinatown for cheaper eats. If you must go to a restaurant, try eating in for lunch as it will be the cheaper meal. Some places have decent weekly specials on their slow day (eg. Monday).

When travelling alone I'm not normally fussed about dinning out and can usually save some money by picking up some bread or sandwiches from cheap bakeries. If you can bear not to eat cooked meals, the convenience store/supermarket snack can do wonders for your bottom line.

Australia needn't be so expensive if you are willing to be open to new experiences, which lets face it, is what traveling is all about!

Firstly accommodation. Try the wonderful site of there you will find amazing friendly and interesting people who are offering a place to stay and food in return for usually about 4hrs work a day doing odd jobs around the house, or on their farm. You'd be amazed at some of the premo locations some of these people are in.

For travel try the ride share section of Everything from people wanting their car shipped and willing to pay the fuel, to other backpackers wanting to split the costs of a rental vehicle.

It's not hard to travel on the cheap, you just have to think outside the box!

Holy crap Danny, just saw your other post about renting a flat in Bondi.

How can you be surprised that, "... My god it is expensive here!!..."

Cheers,
Terry

Ha ha yes probably should have explained that a bit better.. not to worry It's my friends flat here and he's moved out to a new place so let me have it free till the lease is up I'm just now planning my next move to get out and about a bit more.

Your best bet would be to get out of Sydney. I'm Australian, been here all my life and still can't afford to move to sydney and have a life at the same time. You can find some cheaper places in some areas of Newcastle, especially if you live with others and Newcastle is great! Go onto www.gumtree.com and look for places with rooms or granny flats for rent
Good luck

Throw in some world class surfing and it is no wonder Australia is so popular. I’ve been three times and each time I find something new to love.
