Hi all,
I am all brand new to this and only recently thought about travelling so please bare with me. All advise is gratefully accepted I work and have worked in the same place since leaving school. Reasons being is I've never known what I wanted to do and guessed that would eventually, in short time, come to me. Guess what? It hasn't. So I'm still in full time employment and going nowhere. A close friend mentioned he would love to do the travelling thing and I'm thinking the same. I am one of those that couldn't get pack and go. I'd need to know a bit of what happens, what I'd need, what to look out for etc. Where do I start to put a year long trip like this together? How much would I need? I like the idea of China, Japan etc. That type of culture intrigues me. And the Austrailia and New Zealand thing sounds great too.

That's a really, really general question which is likely why you haven't had any responses yet. What are you expecting to be told?
Have you purchased any guide books yet or started researching any destinations? You have to have a place to start...

It's just an idea at this point but something I'd like to make reality. I was just hoping for ideas from people who have been in a similar position to me. It's not something I've done before. Maybe where do I start in terms of visas, travel info, places to visit in a year. This idea is all new to me but its an appealing idea.

Nathan, countless other young (and not so young) people have been in your very same position: Wanting to go travelling.
The (once again, countless) numbers who made this wish turn into reality all did it the very same way: Did some reading and minimal research to decide where they wanted to visit, then started researching and collecting information about those destinations. In this day and age the Internet makes this research very easy.

if i were you i think i would maybe travel china and southeast asia (thailand, vietnam, cambodia etc) for 4-6 months then australia for 6 months and new zealand for 3?
like terry said it is general and research is interesting and really fun! :D but thats a rough intinerary you could start to draft off from
i would recommend write down 6 places u wanna go to and buy a map of the world.. even a basic kids one then your trip will start to become more real!

it can be a little daunting at first but as soon as you have your pack slung over your shoulder trying to find that elusive backpacker hostel from the sketchy directions gave to you by someone at your last hostel, ambling up the beach in beautiful sunshine, rays glinting off the perfect blue aura where the sky meets the sea, life doesn't get much better.
Cast off the shackles and book a flight.
Terry and Tilly have both given great advice, planning where you want to go is good, give yourself a general route/itinery, nothing set in stone, then make the rest up as you travel.
Take the plunge 99.9% of people never regret it.

So I have been a teacher for 3 years and as much as I love my job there is too much out there in this world that I want to experience before I get too old...so today i took the plunge and made the decison and told work im leaving at the end of the School Year!! So currently its me off into the big wide world on an adventure....nervous but very excited! Im looking to leave anytime in October and head to Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Bali and be in Australia just after New year then on to Fuji and New Zealand and i got the tickets for £1550 with STA travel which includes a flexi pass to change ur flights as many times as you want. I have just had friends who have come back from travelling and they said to budget between 600-1000 a month with australia and NZ being the most expensive. So my saving has commenced....!!x
Was in your shoes a year ago, now I'm at the end of my 7 month trip. Just use the Internet to get broad ideas, don't make concrete plans; just a rough outlined path of places you'd like to see. Leave room for places you will inevitably hear about on the road. Buy a LIGHT backpack, northface bigshot was more than enough for me. Buy a plane ticket. Just get out there. It's not half as difficult as you're imagining. The hardest part is making the time and getting the money. The rest is easy. When you prepare too much it's not as adventurous. SE Asia is great and gets my recommendation (Thailand!!!, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Philippines). You won't regret it.
