Budget for 2 Months travelling America? Help!

Hi there,

hey look into couch surfing, saves us a tonne of money and its a good way to experience the local life, also hostels r obviously the best option

It would depend upon where you went and how you traveled once there.

Flights to New York are not too bad but the city itself can be expensive.

Is flying your best option? I took the train to New Jersey from NY to visit a friend for a few days and it was a nice journey, went on to Washington DC for a few more days by train.

I didnt think the tickets were unreasonable, 40/50$ if i remember right but it depends where you want to go and if happy to spend the time traveling between areas.

Hi There!!

I am currently a social work student in glasgow and qualify next year. I am getting married in Sep 2014 and myself and myself and my partner would love to do some travelling before we settle down and thought America would be a good place to start.

We have never travelled before so i am looking for some helpful tips etc.

I know its a bit early but we would need to start saving etc! so if anyone could help with how much money we should save etc that would be great!!

Why have you picked one of the world's most expensive places? I suppose it can be done, but you'd better bring camping gear, and the fall can be fairly wet and cool to cold. The places you want to see are among the most expensive in the USA, by the way!

Here's a link to the hostels in Northern California. This will give you an idea of what costs will be in this part of the country.

As Daawgon said, this is the most expensive place to visit (along with Hong Kong and London), but it can be done on a budget if you keep your travel to a minimum. I suggest picking a region to visit rather than trying to see the whole country. With plans to travel in October-November, the southwest area or west coast area would be the best weather-wise.

Daawgon, we've picked it because it's the place we're most interested in by far.

Thank you very much for the replies everyone, some updates: The trip will now be September & October as opposed to October & November. So I figure still starting in the New York area and then going down to southwest, then to west coast, will be best weather-wise.

We're now thinking a minimum of like £3000 and then essentially as much money as we possibly can on top of that. Total flights right now including the in-country ones are looking like they'll cost around £800, and accomodation will probably be around £1500 working on the assumption that our average nightly rent will work out at £25 ($39) per night, obviously with some places being cheaper and others like NY being more expensive.

I know picking a region is more sensible, but honestly we're only going to be doing this once in our lives and we just want to do as much as humanly possible.

Well, if you start in New York in September, the weather should be excellent there then, and for your trip across the country in October you should have no weather problems.. I'm glad you chose to visit the USA and hope you enjoy your trip.

Write back for more info if you find there are other details you need info on--like specific cities, national parks, camping info (you may be able to stretch your trip by doing some camping along the way), or any other specific need.
