Hi Rob

I'm travelling alone to Sydney as well around October, I've heard balmain budget and backpackers HQ are good! I'm extremely nervous too!!

hey

i will be travelling up the east coast by october, im only staying in sydney for a few week! thanks for the hostels i will have a look at them now.
its more of a excited nervous now, im still thinking of what im going to take with me. are you traveling alone?

Hi

Your welcome. Oh I'm a mix of nerves, me too! I'm looking into getting a decent size backpack, any recommendations? Yeah travelling alone- will be a good experience!

i bought the lowe alpine cerro torre 65:85, not the smallest but i need stuff and i dont mind carrying it as it's an extremely comfy one. good point: front opening too. bad point: big hip belt.

go to a sportsdirect, cotswold outdoor or trekking/hiking store and try them on, you need one to fit you perfectly! then, buy it online if prices are much lower.

i agree with lazhar, the best thing to do is try alot of different bags to find the rite one.
i have gone with the berghaus verden. its a decent size not too big and very comfortable.

Thanks guys.

I will look into sports direct etc, they do have decent backpacks so I've been told. Knowing me I would want the biggest with the amount of (pointless) stuff I will bring! but comfort is vital.

I am staying in the US for 6 months and Australia for a while too, I need to bring a suit, etc. So i need a large bag (65L, extensible to 85).

However, bear in mind that the bigger the rucksack the more you'll fill it, the more it will be heavy to carry everywhere. Do not take anything valuable, only take items you do not mind losing. Bring a daypack just for little excursions.

Few points that matter with rucksack:
- front opening to access quickly your stuff
- straps to protect while in transit (airport, train)
- australia is a warm country so you should need less clothes (lighter and better)
- plan on padlocks for hostels' lockers
- dry sacks (always useful)

Hey i arrive at Sydney in June and i'm unsure of hostels, so feel free to tell me which you find to be good/ bad and whatnot. I don't know how near to the centre to stay because i've looked at some and they can be quite expensive!
