Im heading over in August plannign on being in Sydney for NYE too. Dont weather im starting in Cairns and working my way down or just going straight to Sydney and staying there till January and then heading north.
My thinkin is it would depend on how long yer staying there...if yer planning on stayin more than a month youd prod be better off looking for and apt/room, theres always ppl looking to share the cost, hteres more security and gennerally more comfortable and prob cheaper too for that lenght of time. If your only staying for a week or ten days a hostel would do. From what iv been told you wont need to book them too far in advance esp if your willing to book a bit outside the city (20mins or so by train).
Again,this is all open to correction!
What are your plans after NYE/Sydney??

I plan to arrive in Sydney a few days before NYE travelling from the North.
I have also heard about hostels get booked up quickly but not sure whether to wait a while then book - confused!!

I'm going to be in Sydney for NYE! Leaving end of December! Booking my flights this afternoon! :D :D also going to book my hostel today!
Been looking for hostels and its seems a lot are booked up already! :s or have minimum stay! Think I'm going to go with Base Sydney! They still have availability and a low minimum stay of 7 nights! Not the best reviews in the world but its just to put my head down for a few nights! Will do the trick!
I am also travelling alone so well up with meeting up with folk out there!!

I'm in Sydney for NYE! yeah can't believe the hostels are already getting booked up! I've been looking at base Sydney as well.
How long are you in Australia for?
I've been looking at them as well and they are getting booked up me and someone else I been chatting to on here have been looking at apartments as well but they still seem to be quite expensive, might look at base too see what thats about.
I'm going to arrive in Sydney 27th from Adelaide as spending Christmas with my brother there, planning to be in Australia about a year and flight out early November

Booked my flights yesterday! The nerves have officially kicked in!! Silly really considering how far away it is!!
I land in Sydney New Years Eve morning! Plan to stay in Australia until September time, then to NZ and Asia before coming home the following December! That's my plan at the moment! Have to see how they actually fold out!

Nights in Base hostel,didnt want to go with too much of a plan. Im really nervous as I'm also travelling alone but so excited too!
I plan to stay in Sydney for new year then travel the East Coast.If anyone is around then and has similar plans it would be great to hear from u.

I'm getting to Sydney around 27th/28th December, i'm going to SE Asia first! Also planning on travelling the east coast, haven't really planned much just going to see what happens when I'm there!
I want to do east coast as well, is everyone kind of looking at base then? I have been looking at a couple and also at sharing apartments to see which is cheaper. Are any of you working while your out? I am going with like the minimum funds so am going to have to find work quite quickly to stay, my plan is to work in a place till I have enough money to go to the next place etc x
