Hey guys,
Seattle to Chicago is only a little over 2,000 miles so you have LOTS of time for loads of interesting side trips.
Something to consider... unless you're buying a vehicle consider doing a big looping circle and return to the west coast, otherwise the drop-off charges for a rental will be expensive.
Have fun and good luck with your research.
Cheers,
Terry

Mike makes the best suggestion for purchasing a car for a short trip and then selling it back at the end. You would need to start your trip in Las Vegas, though, if you plan to have him assist you. However, I can't imagine that being a problem for a group of guys around 21-24 years old.
The price will depend on if you rent a car or buy one like mike suggested in that other thread. (I think you have to be 25 to rent a car though)
The next big cost is fuel.
Do you have any places you'd like to see along the way?
