how much do i need to travel to Australia?

im planning on travelling to Australia late October. my plan will be to head to (not yet decided) lol find a job as soon as possible so i can travel but i need a rough estimate on how much is enough to go over there with any one help?

hey there,
if your planning on working you'll need a working holiday visa, which means youll need a minimum of 5,000AUD
However id take every single penny you can get your hands on, the more money you go with the less stress you'll have !!

:D

The minimum you need to be is AUD $5000 (about GBP 3000), an amount chosen because it's the minimum which effectively all backpackers end up spending. That amount would last you about two months and a bit if you're living an average frugal backpacker lifestyle, though there's plenty of tales of people who blow through it in 2-3 weeks, not yet realizing just how expensive things can be. Take into account that even if you find a job straight away (which is unlikely), it'll probably take a month before you'll get paid for the first time. So more money is definitely better!

Also, November/December is generally the worst time of the year to find work in Australia, as things will be winding down in the runup for Christmas, and temporary workers for over the holidays tend to be recruited in October. So arriving in "late" October could be rather unfortunate timing, if you're unlucky. Or it could be just fine; depends a lot on personal perseverance and skills, of course. Just so you take that into account and build some extra buffer into your budget if you at all can.

Hi
thanks for the reply
I did hear it was a minimum of 5,000 AUD but had friends go over with a lot less but haven't really spoke to them about how they got on once they was over there i think my main worry is how easy is it to get work whilst over there. is that what you've got a working holiday visa?

It's illegal to work unless you're on a visa which allows you to; that's either a dedicated work visa (hard to get, expensive), or a WHV (for everyone lucky enough to be 18-30 and from a country those are available for; ridiculously easy to get, and pretty cheap). In rare cases people try to work while on a tourist visa, but that gets cracked down on pretty hard: The worker would face deportation and a ban from the country, while the company would get major fines (and so they won't try to go for it in the first place).

Every so often people do just fine with way less money, but these are the exceptions (and I suspect a lot of them have a pretty miserable time being way too frugal until they find work). I definitely wouldn't recommend counting on you being one of those exceptions. We get way more sob stories on this forum from people who went through their money too fast and have to return home.
