Looks like a fun trip. Hope you enjoy it. There is tons to see here and not even a year long trip would be enough to see it all. -snip-
As far as border crossing into mexico goes. If you are traveling by car I believe all you should need is your passport and you should be fine.
This is mid June right now - do you really want to come when the Southwest is on FIRE?

If you are limited to 3 months, make sure you plan:
- what dates you would like to be in each place
- How long it's going to take you to get there
- How are you going to travel around when you're there
- finally, what you would like to do while you're in each location
If you're traveling on a budget I would suggest looking for discounts and deals. I would recommend searching and planning or at least have an outline of your 3 months in the US. Try looking for travel deals on this site called student rate. You might find something there.

I think I used that before for the megabus deal...
anyhow, I also know they have discounts for car rentals....Maybe that would be a better option for you?
