Hey Guys, I plan to fly to Thailand (BKK) 3rd July. I was hoping someone could give me any advice on traveling alone to Thailand and meeting people in Bangkok to travel with once i'm in Thailand, I plan to travel for 3 weeks as I have some time off work (I work offshore on the oil rigs in the UK) I have not got a plan for traveling and I will go with the flow once i'm there.

If you want to meet with other travellers head over to Kho San road. To meet locals head over to university hang outs unless you're fluent in thai.
Although everyone generally knows english basics, learn some Thai, will help you get around and barter more easily
Oh ... And be prepared for the heat and humidity
Actually , I really like Kao san road but now I didnt like it anymore.
Bcoz now it fully of drunkard. By the way there is a good place to visit once if you come to Thailand. Kao san rd is good place for backpacker and you can find a cheap guesthouse to stay.
It like walk street night market, resturant for chillin, bar, club and it
not really far from Grand Palace which is the most beautiful temple in Thailand.
But if you like to see how local thai people living in 20 years ago you should go to Amphawa.
Here we call Amphawa floating market. You can find several thai local food, old temple,
see firefly at night, living in homestay where is close to the canal.

Thailand is an easy country to visit. With or without any friends to travel with you will have a nice time. But you should have some idea of what you want to see and do.
Transportation in Thailand is very good and not expensive. There is long distance trains, good cheap long distance buses and in Bangkok you also have city rail service. If you want any hotel help you should say what price you want to spend on your room and where.
Khao San Road is a good place to meet people but not the only place. Khao San Road is popular with kids in school and just out of school. Every area of Bangkok has hotels. For shopping the Pratunam/Siam area is fine to. And you will find a little of everything in the Sukhumvit Nana area of Bangkok. This means various priced hotels, adult nightlife, good restaurants and even supermarkets and malls. In this area you also can use the city rail service called the Skytrain. The Skytrain connects with 2 other rail services to take you to and from the Suvarnabhumi Airport and even connect with the subway. The subway takes you to Hualamphong Train station.
You will meet people in hotels, on transportation you use, in beer bars and on tours. You can sign up for tours in hotels and local travel agencies.
Some places you might consider visiting are Chiang Mai and Hua Hin. Both can be reached by train. Nearby to Bangkok is Pattaya - Jomtien about 2 hours away by bus. Read up on these places and see if you have any interests there.
With UK passport no visa required for under 30 days. If you want you can take a side trip to another nearby country for a week - or not. Flying into Bangkok round trip and home from there will give you a cheaper plane ticket than two separate one way flights. Notify your bank that you will be using their debit cards overseas before you leave home. Wait until you get to Thailand to change any currency to Thai baht for the better exchange rate.
Old women on retirement pensions manage to visit Thailand on their own. You will do okay. Just don't get so falling down drunk on alcohol that you do something stupid. Be careful of who you allow into your hotel room when you only just meet them. Beer bars are cheaper than go-go bars. Some nightclubs can be expensive. When you use a meter taxi in Bangkok only pay the meter fare and the ride is not that expensive. Always have small bills and coins for paying for cheap purchases or even taxi drivers. From Suvarnabhumi you can use the Airport Rail Link to many locations in Bangkok but not to Khao San Road area.
You can look up some links for available weather. When it rains most of the time the rain stops in a few hours. Some places have more rain and some have less. No rainfall in malls, movie theaters, bars, hotels, etc. Life moves along even during the rainy season. One benefit is cheaper hotel prices!
Up to you is a term you hear often in beer bars in Bangkok and Pattaya. What you do is up to you!
If your nervous about meeting people dont be! Youl meet people everywhere in Thailand, you cant get away from other travellers

Might be better to start a new post for more replies. For any hotel or hostel advice also include a price range.
In Bangkok the price of hostels and smaller hotels and guest houses are not too much different. Hotels and hostels more expensive during high season.
Suk 11 Hostel, Soi 1 Hostel, Lub D Hostel (s) are popular and allow easy access to the Skytrain.
Read up on Bangkok and see where you want this hostel/hotel. Very young, in school, just out of school maybe Khao San Road area. Want shopping maybe Pratunam area. Want adult nightlife and easy walk to restaurants, Skytrain, malls and street vendors - Sukhumvit Nana area.
Thailand is easy to do on your own. Millions of people do this. You will meet other tourists every where you go. (On tours, on transportation, in airports, in restaurants, in bars and pubs, in hotel lobbies, etc.)
Maybe identify if you are male or female too. Sometimes you get different recommendations if you are female. (Some guys don't mind - maybe welcome - a hotel room over a go-go bar!) Sometimes there is a difference in what "older" tourists want than younger tourists. But asking for hostels, looking for a place to meet people often means someone young.
