I am wanting to do scenic travel along the Pacific coast. The trip is ten days and leisurely and as of now starts in Portland up to Astoria and then back down to San Francisco, CA. Can this be done in ten days and if more than enough time, should I start in Seattle? Thanks.
This is normally a 3 day trip if you take a little time to see the sights along the way. I would start from Seattle if it were me (actually drove this exact route from Seattle to SF back in 2004 and really enjoyed it). If you do decide to drive it from Seattle, consider visiting the Snoqualmie Falls near Seattle, and also the Mount St. Helens visitor center on the way. With 10 days you would even have time to visit Victoria (on Vancouver Island) in Canada first and take a trip through the San Juan Islands via ferry one-way and back to see the Olympia National Forest on the way. This would limit you to only 3-4 days in Oregon, though--so if you plan to stop and hike or stay multiple days and some spots, then take the Victoria option out.
Enjoy your trip.
Thanks.....I have been doing research and there are so many places I want to stop and visit. Looking forward to the trip so much.
When is the trip? If it's this summer, I suggest the - one of the most pristine of all US parks. This is my favorite spot in Washington (NW of Seattle).
You should also consider the San Juan Islands in the Puget Sound (N of Seattle).
Oregon has an awesome coastline, and tons of water (in the form of raging rivers and awesome waterfalls). I personally like the Rogue River in the south, and the Columbia River Gorge for waterfalls.
The City of Portland is the city of bikes and many bike paths. It's also a dog lover's dream! If you come early enough, you can still play in the snow up on Mt. Hood just outside of the city.
If you only have 10 days, I might stick to just Oregon and California, unless you REALLY want to visit Seattle and Washington. There's so much to discover between Portland and SF, like Ashland, Eureka, or even cute towns around outside of Sacramento like Nevada City! Lots to explore
I am flying into Portland on September 5th and plan for a trip lasting until September 17th flying out of San Francisco. Can't wait. Thanks for the help. I do plan on heading north to Mt. St. Helens and then west to Astoria before we start the trip down. Well after the 4 mile bridge that is. If we have extra time, we will buzz over for the train ride in Napa Valley or go past SF to Big Sur and back up. Lots to see in so little time. :-)
September is really the start of summer (warmer weather at last) in San Francisco, and that also means it's very heavily booked at that time - you might want to book early!
Thanks.........I guess I better make sure we have a hotel in Portland and San Francisco even though we are just going to wing it down the coast.
I would tell you that this is not a 10 day trip and you can also visit more places in San Francisco CA. if you really want to visit some of them are : Ride the Cable Cars, Aquarium of the Bay, Take a Cruise of the Bay, Golden Gate Bridge, Golden Gate Park, Fisherman's Wharf, California Academy of Science, Museum of Modern Art,etc.
Thanks Kevinwade. Believe me we will make it a ten day trip....
