I would fly this section of your trip. Both & fly it for around $60 with advance purchase. Spend 1 hour in the air vs all day or all night on a train or bus. You also get a free 30 day entry permit when flying into Tland. Only 15 days if you arrive overland. Fly into either Hat Yai, Krabi or Phuket. After seeing the islands off the Krab coasti, take a bus over to Surat Thani and visit Koh Samui, Phangan, Tao, etc. Good luck with your planning.
I did it many years ago. An incredibly boring ride, apart when when you get off walk along and get on again at the customs border with Thailand. And not cheap either.
Fly it.
the night bus to Thailand is cheaper than the train.. get your bus ticket at golden mile complex at beach road.
At least in the train you can get up and walk about though there is nowhere to go. In the bus you are stuck in a tiny seat forever, or so it will seem.
I did the train from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur. It was quite comfortable, with nice views-- mostly of palm plantations, but for me, that was a new thing. Maybe you could take the train to KL, then fly from KL to Bangkok? KL is worth seeing for a day or two, itself.
Thanks for the responses guys!
I'll check out the cheapest route - maybe go to KL for a day then fly to Bangkok or fly straight to Bangkok (want to get the 30 days visa just incase - hadnt realised there was a different number of days by entry).
