I'm on my gap year and would love to travel to central america around October for 4ish months but it all seems so daunting. I'm planning on volunteering in Merida, Mexico with International Volunteer HQ for 4/5 weeks (so start other travel Nov) and then from there possibly travel Belize, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras (Bay Islands) and Costa Rica (possibly South America as well). This absolutely terrifies me because if I don't meet someone on my volunteering stint that wants to travel, then I will be travelling by myself and I have no idea what I need to do or prepare e.g. Visas etc. I don't even know if it will be enjoyable if I am by myself or whether I'll just be too stressed out the entire time to appreciate everything.
Nitaa, there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to be intimidated by Central America. It has been firmly on the Gringo Trail for decades and all the usual sights are covered in great detail by many excellent guidebooks. The hostels will be full of nervous, first time travellers exactly the same as yourself, you'll have no problems finding like minded travellers.
Tranquilo and have fun with your research.
Cheers,
Terry
