I am going to be leaving London around September 20th for an extended overland tour of West Africa, and then going on to Ethiopia and East Africa, finally ending in SA. Looks like a dream trip, David! You are very brave to be travelling through Mali (even southern Mali) these days. I hope you don't run into any trouble.
I really wish I could go with you. Alas, time and money and a 2-year-old son won't allow it.
Yes, I am concerned about Mali, though there really isn't anyway round it. Perhaps if things are really dicey, I can go through Senegal for as long as possible.
There is a great blog at http://familyinafrica.wordpress.com/ about a family traveling the length of Africa with a 2 1/2 year old. From Ethiopia south, they are doing pretty much what I am planning on doing. It is a great read with lots of information.
