Europe (schengen countries) for longer than 6 mo (UScitizen)

I've read that traveling the Schengen countries as a US citizen, you only have 6 months. I would love to backpack throughout Europe for longer than that. I know within the Schengen countries, I would travel longer than this. Has anyone ever worked around this without going back home or flying to another country then back. Doing my research now. Someone please help me.

'I've read that traveling the Schengen countries as a US citizen, you only have 6 months.'
You have read wrongly. Research again. You have, specifically, 90 days in 180 days within those countries who are signatories to the Schengen agreement, before you must exit. At present there are 26 counties in the area.
There are, perhaps, 49 countries in Europe depending on your views. Exit Schengen after 90 days and go to others, like the U.K. is what most would do or go to North Africa. Without knowing which counties you have on your wish list it is not possible to help further.
