I am at the beginning of planning my round the world trip, where I am hoping to cover South East Asia (around 3 months), Australia (around 2 months), NZ (where I plan to stay and work for around 6 months) and then South and Central America (around 3 months).
Generalizing a lot, and assuming a lot of things about travel style in the following (small good quality dorm rooms (Oz/NZ) or decent quality gueshouses (SE Asia / South America), public transport, self-catering (OZ/NZ) or cheap eateries). More money is always better. Costs in USD.
SE Asia: Bus tends to be the best way to get from place to place. Average daily budget would be about $40; can go as low as $30/day in some countries, especially if you don't go for rooms with AC.
Australia: Trains for some long stretches if booked well in advance, busses (Greyhound or preferably cheaper regional alternatives) for the rest, and renting a car for short times if you want to go into national parks and explore. $70/day minimum; can easily double if you go out partying or do a lot of activities.
New Zealand: InterCity busses bring you everywhere you want to go; look into a pass, but also always compare to super saver deals before actually booking on the pass. $60/day average, though can go to quite a bit less when you're working if you're staying in a house share; also can double if going out partying or doing a lot of activities.
South America: Bus all the way - maybe with a few internal flights (for example to get to/from Patagonia) Budget maybe $50/day average-ish? Some countries are quite a bit more expensive (Chile/Argentina), some quite a bit cheaper (Bolivia?). Really big differences here. I'm assuming it's similar for Central America, but am not completely certain. Can probably go down toward $40/day if you're sticking to jut the cheap countries.
It’s important to know what you can afford to spend on your travels and set a budget. When doing so, plan to spend on what really matters to you and save on what doesn’t. Maybe accommodation isn’t that important to you but expensive restaurants or scuba diving are. Save one place to spend another.
