I have never heard of this (and been advising people about working holiday visa information for a long time now), nor can I find anything about it on the Australian department of immigration website (although its current incarnation is significantly less helpful when trying to find information than the previous version, so maybe it exists and they have just hid the information very well).
The closest thing I've been able to find are the following two FAQ entries:
Based on this, I wouldn't risk it. If you want to stay longer after the end of a WHV (and aren't eligible for a second WHV (from doing specified work (fruit picking e.a.) for three months)), it'd be much better to hop over to New Zealand, and apply for an eVisitor to Australia once your WHV has expired. That'll allow you to stay for another three months.
