Hey guys! I am planning a Greece trip for May and was wondering if anyone had suggestions. Is our choice of month okay? We would like to do some island hopping. Suggestions on the best way from Athens is appreciated! If anyone has rough estimation on costs as well in terms of transportation/accommodations, that would help!
Usually on May sea is rather "fresh" and some people avoid swimming till the end of the month, but air temperature is warm enough for sunbathing and not too hot to distract you from sightseen or other activities.
gtp.gr and openseas.gr ae the best sites to check ferry schedules. It is very hard to suggest routes or specific destinations as there are 100s of islands to choose from and you reveal nothing about your interests... Why islands only and not mainland by the way?
About costs, in general fast ferries are much more costly than the slow ones and rates depends on distances and are set for the whole season. For example slow (but stable and very reliable) Blue Star ferry offers Piraeus-Santorini economy class for 37.50 euro one way per person, while definately faster (but rather unreliable for many reasons) Sea Jet offers same route for 61.50 euro.
Accomodation-wise, unless you look on campings or something, your best bet is rooms to let. If you just walk in and ask for a room, especially for a long-ish stay, you may be lucky to land say an ensuite twin room, often with basic cooking facilities, for ~25-30 euro for two people. But this depends a lot on island and specifics.

I personnaly think May is one of the best period to visit Greece. The other is end September/October.
Nice weather, not too hot nor to crowded as in summer.
You can board in Piraeus for a lot of Islands in Egean sea. Easy and plenty of choice. Just do not miss Santorini!
And do not trust greek people : It is very nice to bath in May, at least for north european or canadian people

May is a nice period to travel to Greece.
