Some adventure tour companies, such as those based in South Africa, will allow you to join a portion of their tours, such as those beginning in Nairobi. The cost is reasonable. Some price their tours in South African rand, which currently is depressed against the U.S. dollar. Suggest you look at these as an affordable option to independent travel. Generally, travel in Africa isn't as inexpensive as travel in Asia. And it isn't as easy. Some tours are "accommodated," using lodges and hotels. Others are primarily camping. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the useful question , It is possible to travel to Kenya and use public transport. However while operating on a lean budget I would ask you to try car hire for the two days ( Naivasha and Nairobi ) for convenience ( yes it is still possible to get a good car plus a driver at a fair price ).
In Naivasha and Nakuru you can find some decent accommodation which you can negotiate for at an affordable price. While in Naivasha remember to visit Hells gate National Park and While in Nakuru remember to go to lake Nakuru National Park.( Carry some sunscreen ).Naivasha is a small town and its easy finding your way round.
Keep some cash aside for park fees and other activities you might want to engage in e.g cycling through hellsgate.
For the mara the terrain is not good and its a long drive,you will need to work with a local safari operator so that they can seek out the best deals for you and help you save since they are familiar with the intricacies regarding accommodation.

1.Yes you can use pubic transport and no need to come back to Nairobi, It should take you around 3-4 hours with your driver but a bit longer if you need to wait for public transport.
2. Yeah you can get some better deals on popular website like Rupu, and get accomodation offers or deals
3.You can hire a car easily with usd 40, if you need a driver it will cost you around USD 60-70 (Remember you will also need to fuel your car yourself.)
4.I have not written a lot about masai mara on my blog, but I hope the community here will give you some great tips.
