weather is very important to me! which suburbs in each city are good to live in? want to be near beach! which months would you suggest living in each place if i have a year? I am a 22 yr old female from california.
I am having the same dilemma. I arrive in Sydney on the 29th of January, but I have friends in Melbourne so I think I'm gunna head over there after a few days to work for a bit.
Sydney for weather, Sydney for beaches.
Bronte, Manly, Bondi, coogee are all good beach suburbs
If weather and beaches are very important to you, then you basically have no choice as Sydney wins out easily on both counts. St. Kilda beach in Melbourne is nice, but no where near Coogee/Manly/Bondi etc. And the weather in Melbourne, although it can be really nice, changes a LOT. Today is supposed to be summer and it's hailing and 10 degrees outside.... 5 days ago it was 38 degrees (celcius).
Then again, if you are after a city with a much more relaxed attitude, a MILLION times better and more cafes, restaurants and bars and generally a much more cultured feel, it's no competition as Melbourne wins hands down.
I've heard Californians compare it to LA (Sydney) vs. San Francisco (Melbourne) and from what I've seen of both US cities it's pretty accurate. I've lived in both Australian cities for nearly a year at different times and I'm not really able to pick a favourite, but for me that's probably because what Melbourne has to offer weighs up against the weather and beaches benefits of Sydney.
Sydenys good for weather and beaches but thats about it as for Melbourne beaches are pretty good and you can drive an hour out and have a whole beach to yourself but the waters realtively cold year round unless you get a freak warm current seen that once in mylife and bloody loved it. if you like a surf both places are pretty good although you tend to get less crouds in the colder months down melbourne way and theres some good breaks either side of the city bells beach for instance and some ace less surfed places. Personally no offence to the Sydney siders but never really been a great fan of Sydney much more rushed and i've you see more arseholes than a public toilet. anyway thats my two bucks worth.

She said Sydney people are so fuckin boring and don't care about other people.
She strongly recommended me to move to Melbourne,
she just said people of melbourne are really cool.
If it has to be one of those two cities, Melbourne is better and a hell of a lot cheaper. If weather is important to you, well forget living in those two places which have crappy weather for about 9 months of the year and go up north to Queensland and to Surfers Paradise. They get over 200 days of sunshine a year, the weather is very much like california, living expenses aren't as expensive as Sydney, but they aren't as cheap as other parts of Australia or even Queensland which aren't on the beach. If you are here on a working holiday visa, you should have no problems getting a job or two even for unskilled positions, as a lot of the younger people (16-26) mostly young women addicted to getting a tan along with a deadly skin cancer, are beach bums or enjoy the perfect surf so can't be bothered working. So instead, they spend most their existance bludging off the government and sunbaking or surfing down at main beach or any one of the other beaches up the coast. This is all despite the fact that most shops in Surfers Paradise and the enormous shopping complexes have signs up saying help wanted, so their is no shortage of unskilled jobs just a shortage of young people who can be bothered working.
thats good news, on the job front. im thinking of spending my time in manly, or coogee, but now somebody mentioned bondi its been thrown into the mix. basically i will go anywhere its easiest to get a job. im so sick of pessimistic people telling me that il go to australia and wind up unemployed. although i must say i envy those beach bums and surfers!
i don't think Sydney has been portrayed very accurately in this thread. Melbourne may have more cafe's, a more cultured feel to it(which is just your opinion) and be alot cheaper to live in but Sydney has some much much nicer suburbs to live in and visit, more opportunities workwise, beachwise and in alot of cases entertainment wise.
I think the weather is supposed to be more consistent in Sydney as they say that Melbourne can get the weather of all four seasons in one day (it's true - I've seen it happen!) but I'd pick Melbourne over Sydney every time. I just think its got a more relaxed feel about it, loads of beautiful parks and from there you can take trips down the stunning 'Great Ocean Road'. Once you get past the obvious attractions of the opera house and the harbour bridge, I think Sydney is just another city, whereas Melbourne has got a bit more personality. On this trip I had 3 days in Sydney and was ready to leave, but a week in Melbourne just wasn't enough!
