europe in Winter

Hi, Im going to backpack around europe this christmas and was wondering if anyone had any tips or interesting things to do in europe at winter time?

Where will you be/ plan to be exactly, if you know it already?

We travel to Europe every winter, and spend a lot of time in southerh Germany,Austria and Switzerland. You can base yourself in Munich and do lots of day trips from there to smaller villages etc. It is the most beautiful time of year, and the Christmas markets are all over Germany.

Hi,

Thanks for the help. We are doing a massive whirlwind trip and starting in london. we are going to paris, brussels, amsterdam, copenhagen, berlin, prauge, vienna, venice, pisa, siena, rome, pompeii and sorrento. any tips would be appreciated.

So I see you're heading to Austria. Do you ski? You could go to Innsbruck and ski/snowboard for a weekend . . . . The best skiing in the Alps is in February, though, so it depends on which dates you are planning to be in Austria for. However, don't let that stop you if you'll be there in December or later. . . .

Yup, Christmas market is a big thing especially in Germany and Austria, and they are absolutely wondeful. Nothing beats drinking a nice mug of Glühwein (mulled wine) while wandering around the market. All over Europe, there are also outdoor skating rinks set up. Last year one was even set up on one of the floors of the Eiffel Tower! Not sure if they're doing it again this year though. Tivoli Garden in Copenhagen transforms into winter wonderland as well in December (and more glögg drinking!).

Apart from Christmas-related events, I can't really think of something out of the ordinary, except telling you to try local specialties that are usually available only around Christmas/New Year period. E.g. in Italy, there are a couple of breads that are traditionally linked to Christmas - and . In France, is very much associated with Epiphany celebration.

have you considered Slovenia ? Ljubljana ? Its really starting to get some some good rankings in polls. Ljubljana has been voted best small city Location in the world. Slovenia is 5th in the world as a destination. In a article by the national geographic Ljubljana was rated as one of the most honest city. Polls are just to get you to consider , i would recommend it to any none European as a destination. For me what you get is a something completely different to the larger "mainstream" European countries. This all most a young Europe. Not over populated , mass marketed, franchised , in personal service country. You have small family businesses , who care about customers returning.
The country itself has from city locations with great theaters coffee bars , theaters , a lovely slow moving river running through the capital , trees, very "leafy" and relaxed vibe. If you head out of Ljubljana you have mountains, great ski resorts , wild life that compares to many countries. Tradition as well , the Slovenes hold on to the tradition so much and its not just displayed for the tourist like in some countries ... these guys are celebrating there traditions in the low season also.
