If the prices of rental ski equipment are anything like they are here, it won't be cheap. And ski trips are not in the "cheap holidays" list - they're one of the most expensive.
For flights, try . I can't advice on which shops to find out about hire gear as you're in America and I'm in Australia. Go to google - type in ski hire and your location. I went google-hunting and there's heaps. For example -

I never saw snow until I was 40 - yes it was fun to see snow, but unless you ski, it's very over-rated.
Not only is there the cost of hire equipment, there's accommodation (not cheap) and ski lessons (also not cheap).
Does it have to be a snow trip? If you've never bought plane tickets then you've never flown before - as I said, why not plan a trip for the both of you - I'm sure your daughter would enjoy her (and your) first trip just as much.
If we are talking N.America the ski season will be over by the end of May,there might be some helicopter outfits still open for glacier skiing but that dont come cheap,why not just take the kid to Disney.
Because of all the extra rain and snow this year in California and Wyoming and Colorado, there will likely be a few ski spots still open in late May this year--but only the really large ones where it will take awhile for the snow to melt.
If you plan to ski, the largest spot in the western US is Mammoth Mountain (in California on the east side of the Sierras near Bishop). I've actually skied there over the 4th of July weekend. (takes a long time for their snow to melt because of it being on the east side of the mountains and therefore the afternoon sun doesn't melt the snow too much)
Conditions weren't great there in July, but they will be good in May. You can't fly there directly--you have to fly into Reno or Lake Tahoe and then drive south 3 hours. You can also probably ski in the Lake Tahoe area as well this year in late May.
Other good choices would be Jackson Hole in Wyoming (and some of the best national parks in the country--Yellowstone and Grand Teton are right next door), or places like Vail or Beaver Creek west of Denver.
East of Salt Lake City is Alta and Park City--but the snow tends to melt quickly in Utah once May arrives--so I'm not sure that would be my first choice area.

Some costs to contemplate not including air fare
Car rental = $150 per week
Ski area hotel $80=$120 per night
Renting ski equipment $20 each per day
Lift ticket $30-$60 each per day
Meals $40 each per day.
Self catering would work out a lot cheaper, if you're prepared to shop and cook. It takes a little time, but'll save you a lot of money if you're on a tight budget.
