Taking a suitcase - will i look stupid?

I just bought a backpack and tried to fill it with the least amount of items possible. Everything fits, but i just don't like the feeling of having a backpack strapped onto my back. If i take a small suitcase, am i going to look stupid? I'm going to be moving around somewhat on the coast and will most likely be staying in hostels. Thanks in advance.

I don't think you will look stupid at all. I don't like carrying a backpack either (mainly because I am small) so I normally take a holdall on wheels whenever I go away. I would make sure your suitcase has wheels but I would imagine most of them do nowadays.

Worrying about what others think should not be a priority. Making your travel experience comfortable for you is. Bring your suitcase or whatever you want to bring.

I was thinking the same thing. I didn't want to carry around a backpack so was going to take a wheeled case, however i've now bought a wheeled holdall. I got a large one - 143 litres to make sure i can fit everthing in easily, but it's more supple and squashy (and lighter) than a suitcase so i'll be able to squash it into hostel lockers and luggage racks of greyhound etc...

I travelled all over New Zealand on a backpacker bus with a wheeled trolley case as they're called - a suitcase with wheels. It was the 64cm size. I stay in hostels in a dorm and haven't had any problems. I lock the main section, but not the others.

I decided to downsize and went with a 55cm one when I travelled to SE Asia recently. Both suitcases were Antler and carry a 7 year (or was it 10) guarantee. I also purchased one of those bags which you can slide over the handle.
I actually bought the one called the beauty case as it was the size I preferred. I put a small backpack (daypack) in my suitcase and used that when I went out each day.
HTH.

i guess i just don't want to stick out like a sore thumb. I just find that backpacks are not convenient as they're meant to be.

Maybe i'll look into a wheeled holdall. What is the main advantage or difference between a wheeled holdall and a small regular suitcase? Any particular brands that are better?

A wheeled suitcase/holdall/trolley case has wheels on it so you don't have to carry it.
Edited to add: I'm not sure what you mean by a small regular suitcase.
I have found to be very good. There are other brands of course, some dearer, some cheaper. Look for one that is lightweight and is extendable. There are suitcases and trolley bags - a suitcase is more structured and has "sides" whereas the trolley bag is more like a duffle bag. I did have a duffel bag but the problem with it was it didn't stand up - that is you're waiting at the airport or bus, and the trolley bag didn't stand on its wheels which was a real nuisance.
