I'm going to Italy for the duration of this summer (to be a tutor with ACLE). I'm getting a train from Glasgow all the way to Italy. Thing is, i'm not sure what luggage to take.
I strongly recommend getting something that is easier to handle than a duffle bag. A 59 liter fully stuffed is going to be heavy, depending on what you have inside it might be well over 20 kgs.
I've had a duffle bag once and I thought it would be ok since I would not be moving much, only for 10 days from Portland, Maine via Boston to New York. Boy, was I wrong! The thing was big and heavy (everything I could need during 3 months of summer camp in the USA) and as my luck had it one of the straps and the main zipper broke. Hauling it 3 miles along a busy street in Manhattan was a real pain. I initially planned to go home from Frankfurt Airport by train, but it would have involved several tight connections. I was so glad my dad drove 6 hours to the airport to save me the hassle of getting all my crap home!!
I've never travelled with a duffle again, I think that unless they got wheels they are completly useless. It doesn't have to be a rucksack, a rolling suitcase would be just as good. Anything that helps you make a mad dash for your connecting train.
I also think that 59 liters is way too big. If possible try to find something that is between 40 and 50 liters in size.
