Melbourne is not listed (Only Canberra) and try as I might I simply cannot get that little black dot to appear there. It was showing up in the middle of Ayers Rock.

Just wait till you see the new version, coming sometime soon. *g* (I haven't seen it myself yet either, but I'll trust blindly that it's an improvement.)
But for now:
On the Travellerspoint map:

Melbourne most definitely is listed - you'd merely have had to zoom in on the map more, as we dynamically load only the 'most important' locations depending on the zoom level of the map. The reason a line starts in the middle of a country is that you haven't picked a location with latitude and longitude, and so we only have the country to go on with positioning.
The way to build a travel map is primarily through the location autocomplete box. Basically, from the map screen, pick a country from the country select box, then type the first few letters of a location in the location box - wait a second or two (this seems very sluggish at the moment; when I created it, it gave results almost instantaneously - Peter?, any idea what's up with that?) and then click on the suggestion of Melbourne from the autocomplete. This click will fill in numbers in the lat and long boxes, and the location will now show correctly on the flash map above. Add in dates, save and add a new destination.
The autocomplete mechanism should have pretty much every town you can think of. It's bad with national parks and such, though, so sometimes you'll want to add a location that's not in our database. What you do then is to enter the location name, zoom in on the map (using the +/- and arrows keys), click the "select on map" button and then click exactly on the map where the location should be positioned. This will again fill in the latitude and longitude, and move the trip line to that location.
From that point on, this newly defined location will also be part of your autocomplete, and you don't need to painfully navigate to it on the map anymore in order to be able to use it.
When looking at the map of Cambodia, apart from the country name, all it shows is tons of Cambodian names Phumi etcs there. It appears that none of the landmarks on Google maps are on yours - not even the airport nor Siem Reap.
That is correct; the database behind the map effectively only has cities in it. There really are many of those, though. 2 million of them. Just zoom in or use the autocompletion mechanism - for some cities (e.g. Melbourne) it goes down to the level of naming individual neighbourhoods.

Thanks Sander. I did as you suggested and just typed the first three letters of the place and yes, a little box did drop down and yes. the Lat and Long did appear.
I also realised to map a trip you need to start at the beginning - starting with your home town. Anyway, it's all good now and I've deleted the first one. (That one btw had me landing somewhere in the middle of the ocean north east of Japan!
