I don't think anyone will be able to predict now, how it will be by then.
Here is what I would do in your situation.
Don't book any ticket into Thailand unless the situation is definitely resolved.
If you want to go to Thailand, wait and see what happens before purchasing your ticket.
If you need to purchase your ticket, and the situation is not resolved, don't go there. There are many other places you can go instead. Choose another place you would like to go.
I know money and time are too precious to spend for vacation in troublesome country. However, that's almost half a year from now. It's hard to tell. Things change day-by-day here. I don't even know what will happen here tomorrow.
I will keep you people posted. When things get better ........or worse.
Well I'll be going there around the same time, so If it is a bad idea, the two of us can suffer together.

Some of us choose to avoid places where there is an increased risk of having problems.
No-one knows how the situation is going to be in September. What we do know that is the protestors are mainly located at Rajaprasong and Lumphini Park. Bangkok is a huge city and so avoiding these areas is extremely easy.
Nowhere outside of Bangkok has been affected by the red shirts.

I am heading to Australia in September and was thinking about stopping off in Thailand for about a month. I was wondering if any of you could guess what the political situation might be by then. I know it is a long ways away, but last time I went was January of 09 and advice from this website was spot on a few months in advance. Or maybe I just need a little bit of re-assurance and peace of mind to purchase my ticket.

The protestors seem to be more or less happy with this compromise, so lets hope things just get better from here I wouldn't worry about it too much- especially if you head out of Bangkok right away. The rest of Thailand just wants life and tourism to go back to normal.
And September isn't that bad of a rainy season! I spent all of September last year there and aside from an hour of heavy rain every other day or so, it was sunny and warm. At least it's not cold rain like in Europe

Second guessing political situations are just that - a guess. Who can say what will happen in four months time?
I just need a little bit of re-assurance and peace of mind to purchase my ticket.
If you need re-assurance then it's probably wiser not to go there.
Something to remember is when events are portrayed in the media they are not always correct and don't always show the true state of affairs. Situations could be not as bad as newspaper reports, on the other hand they could be a lot worse.
Why the urge to visit Thailnd knowing the current situation? Is there not another Asian country you could travel to instead?
I'm visiting Thailand again this July. Am I concerned about red shirt protests? Not at all. If there are any ongoing protests by then I will simply ensure I avoid the area(s) where protests are occurring. No different to whether I was flying in tomorrow. Bangkok is a big city. From what I've read, everywhere else in Thailand there is no problem.
