Hi,sorry to post such a general thread but I really don't know where to begin.
Since you’re staying in the San Diego area, generally, but still get to see some other parts of California then you might want to consider Amtrak California. They have a route down in that part of California that goes from San Diego up to San Luis Obispo. Amtrak California is reasonably priced you can find some savings and some trip ideas on their Twitter page ().
As for accommodations, if you’re looking for basically free look at couchsurfers.org (). You can arrange to crash on other users' couches (or whatever furniture they have for available). It’s community-based. The people are very welcoming and safe. I think it’s the best way to go for dirt cheap—basically free—accommodations.
