I am from Cameroon, Central Africa and honestly African volunteering programs tend to be on the more expensive side. A lot of African NGOs don't charge you if you want to volunteer. However, it is usually hard to get in touch with them because they don't utilize the internet or publicly advertize volunteer opportunities.
I know a few good ones but I'm not sure which area in Africa you are interested in. West? central? south? etc There are some low cost programs in North Africa ( Morocco especially) and some in Southern Africa too. Let me know your region of interest and I'll get back to you.
