Ive actually flown quite alot but never had a connecting flight so im abit confused about the time you allow to catch a connecting flight.
I guess you answered the question partially already: if it's late, you will miss the connecting flight probably.
I had the same with a flight from Amsterdam via Frankfurt to Johannesburg with Lufthansa and onward with South African Airways. Also about an hour or a bit more, but everything went well and even though they were two different airlines, the luggage arrived with us in Johannesburg without a delay (checked that before of course, sometimes airlines don't offer that connecting flight without having to pick up you luggage first).
The only other option is checking if there are flights leaving earlier from London, or maybe fly the day before to Frankfurt, but that will cost you a hotel room. Still, might be much cheaper of course...or check if it's easy enough to spend the night on the airport.
Both flights were with Lufthansa and there were no other flights available leaving London for the same price.
I even looked at the flights from Frankfurt to Buenos Aires so i could find my own way to Frankfurt either earlier or the day before but they were about £150 more which i find strange as you wouldnt be on the London to Frankfurt flight.
I guess it didnt bother alot of people because by the time i thought about it all the flights over the 2 months they were going cheap for have been booked.
If the flight is on time the connection is probably do-able which is why it'll be advertised. I think the flight you mention is the first flight of the day from H'row to Frankfurt, so you wouldn't be able to get an earlier flight without going the night before. Frankfurt airport is big and sometimes confusing but if your onward flight is from the same section of the airport you should be ok. Lufthansa flights all use Terminal 1 which has three sections of gates; A, B and C. Lufthansa uses A and B which have good connections between them. I once flew from London to Tunis via Frankfurt and had around an hour to connect - it was a bit rushed, but it all went smoothly.
Lufthansa are pretty efficient though and if your first flight is late but you could still just make your connection, there should be someone waiting as you step of the plane to help you get there. Of course that doesn't help if you miss it totally. If your onward flight is also with Lufthansa it may be worth calling them to find out what happens and what they'll provide if you miss the connection due to the first flight being delayed.
Oops - missed your last post going up as I was working on my reply! I see that your onward flight would be with Lufthansa which will help as at least you won't have to change terminals.
As long as it's part of the same ticket, I usually don't mind short connection times, unless I'm in a rush. The benefit of a delay is the airline puts you up in some nice hotel and gives you spending money.... back in my backpacking days that would have been a treat!! Then again, if I'm in a rush, and you miss your connection, it's annoying as can be. And travel insurers, at least the ones I know, won't cover anything unless the connection time is more than 2 hours!
Agree with Sam -- as long as you're with the same airline and have a flexible timeline, no bad can come from a short layover. If you miss your flight you'll get on the next one and should get a hotel overnight, probably a pretty fancy one.
Of course if time is tight then it's different... Anyway these days about 75% of flights are on time, so the chances of missing the connection are kind of slim.
