Aussie backpacking in Europe.

Hi, I have a few initial questions regarding both my trip & the things I'm leaving behind here in Oz...

Can I only buy a Eurail ticket from Australia or can I purchase it when I get over to London?

You should buy it before you leave - Eurail is strictly for non-European tourists, thus it is normally sold outside Europe only. There are a few places where you can buy the Eurail pass in Europe, but it won't be as easy. It is not a problem to predate the Eurail ticket, it doesn't have to start right away.

Is the Eurail ticket (point to point) the cheapest way to do it?

You are confusing two things: Eurail pass and normal point-to-point tickets. A Eurail pass is a special offer available to people residing outside of Europe for rail travel in Europe. What is cheaper to use depends upon your your general travel plans and your route of travel.

I am only able to spend three months in europe in one period??

It is 90 days in a 180 day period inside the Schengen Area. The Schengen Area covers most of Europe, except the UK, Ireland and some Eastern European countries in the Balkan. You can spend up to 90 days inside the Schengen Area at one stretch, if you want to stay longer you need to apply for a working holiday visa for one of the Schengen countries or hop in and out of the Schengen Area.

An idea for your car is if you have any family members or close friends you trust, who are looking for a car. You can hand it over to them for the 12 months you are away giving them full use but returning it to you when you get back. All they have to do in return is pay the on roads, eg petrol, insurce etc.

it's one idea i've heard done before and probably not a bad one. Cars like being driven and if you leave yours in storage for 12 months it probably won't do it any favours sitting idle for so long.

hope this helps.

You should keep insurance if you've been insured awhile, otherwise it could increase when you return, by a lot.
Can't buy Eurail from Europe, has to be in Australia
Eurail ticket is cheap, esp if you use overnight trains instead of accomodation
