Gran Canaria - outdoor sports

Hi Luke here,

Great choice!

We just got back from Gran Canaria and we too dont like noisy tourists resorts.

We stayed in El Valley de Agaete, which is in the North of the island.
Most resorts, alcohol and party are in the south.

You have to go. Its beautiful. Your surrounded by nature and mountains.
We trekked up an ancient footpath called Camino Tamadaba. It took
us 3 hours to the top, but when you get to the top you´ll be amazed. Guaranteed!

There is a lovely port nearby, Las Nieves. Restaurants serve the freshest fish I´ve
had in many years. There are ferries which go to Tenerif a few times a day and it only
takes around an hour.

Hope to have been of some help! Enjoy your holidays!!

Claire Walson

Thanks Claire

Sounds just what we´re looking for.

How about accomodation? Are there places where to stay?

Thanks

Hi luke,

I'm from Gran Canaria and I think Claire's suggestion is a good one. Agaete might be a bit windy place though, Las nieves is a little picturesque fishing village full of fresh fish restaurants. I personally didn't know about touristic stay offers in this area so I looked for a bit and found some links:
http://www.laslongueras.com/en/home.htm
http://www.niumba.com/index.php/cod.search/tipo_zona.8/po.agaete/zpr.las-palmas/tipo_alojamiento.5/lang.en

I think what you're looking for is rural tourism so you can stay calm or practice hiking. I've found this site where you can study various offers : http://acantur.es/www/FichaNavegacion.php (it's nice because some have videos and good pictures, so you can have a clear idea of where you're going to.)
Another interesting site may be : http://www.grancanariarural.com/Default.asp?lan=en

Apart from villa de Agaete, I'd recommend central part of the island which is greener and full of great paths. (the Pinar de Tamadaba view, as Claire said, it's just amazing!) I'd strongly recommend Tejeda and Artenara, both beautiful typical places with great paths and views. Please don't miss the Roque Nublo, which is one of our most important natural monuments! :D
Here you go hiking in Gran Canaria site: http://www.spain-grancanaria.com/uk/walking-hiking.html

You will enjoy for sure "Los llanos de la Pez" (Tejeda) A pine tree forest with common outdoor barbecues, very near from El Roque Nublo and Tejeda's main cross.

This is the canary islands tourism site. It may be helpful, you can download maps and get a lot of information: http://www.turismodecanarias.com/canary-islands-spain/index.html

Well, I hope I've helped you
I hope you and your family enjoy Gran Canaria so much you come again soon :D
If you have doubts don't hesitate to ask!
