Hey everyone,
Okay- so I've been trying to plan this trip for quite a while now, and I've read so many forums, websites, travel guides, etc, that I am possibly hitting a little bit of information overload and having a hard time actually nailing down details at this point. So if it seems like I'm asking a pretty broad question here- don't think it's just me being lazy and not wanting to do research on my own, it is just a genuine request for knowledge and opinion from someone looking for more direct input. I might even be jumping the gun on this, but I stumbled on this message board, and I've yet to ask anyone else's input, and it just struck me to do so. So I am. I appreciate it.
I don't have the experience to give good advice about what to do once you are there, but I would definitly recommend working on your spanish as much as you can before you get down there. You can get the pimsleur course introduction (first 8 lessons) for next to nothing on line. I sprung for the full course (level 1) and am impressed with the functional and useful things I learned. Homestay is a great way to pick spanish up fast, but I think that time will be more productive if you get a few basics committed to memory first.
Anyway, that is my 2 cents... good luck!
You don't mention Central America at all except for this idea of learning SPanish there. Good place to learn Spanish, but it's not feasible if you want to do everything else in SA. Go to Ecuador.
