Hey Sophie,
Im heading off to Melbourne in early Sept too, but unfortunately im going solo cos all my mates are either too sensible or too boring to come with me
Ive never been to Oz but im planning on going for 4 months and ive got my WHV so i plan to pick up some casual works as i travel. I plan to travel clockwise stopping at Alice Springs, Cairns, Mackay, Byron Bay etc working my way down the east coast to Sydney for x-mas and the new year before i head off to NZ!!
Sorry ive not been much help to ya but i it would be cool to have someone to do a bit a of travelling with if our paths meet.
Gary
Hiii
Ok so I know these questions have prob been asked before but me and my friend are starting out a year long trip around oz in sept on a working visa, we're 99% starting at Melbourne and just want to know what times of the year are best to be in which place? We would like NYE in Sydney and we want to stay a while in each place and do fruit picking to get our second year visa - hope someone can help - thanks soph x
Why does everyone think Sydney is NYE? (Sigh) We do good fire crackers too youy know.
The northern part of Australia is best during the cooler months - May to September, the southern section do October to April. Summer is December to March, school holidays at the end of the year are from DEcedmber 20th to the end of January/beginning of February. You will need to pre-book your accommodation for this time as everybody goes "on holidays" - accommodation places get booked out, plus it's peak season.
Peak season for Darwin and the Top End is June/July/August, same with Cairns and the rest of FNQ.
For fruit picking, the lists each state and seasons.
You should book your accommodation for NYE six months in advance as it books out quickly.

Hi Araluen,
Just picking up on your Cairns/FNQ, how long would you say would be suitable to check out the whole area? My interest isn't so much in the acitvities but more seeing the sights and doing tours. I note on another thread you've travelled quite a bit so will probably have a good idea on this one.
I was looking at heading towards this area between Jul - Sep which I guess will be the peak season as you mention below so all the prices are higher I suppose?
Any other handy tips on travelling this area much appreciated - feel free to PM me.
Cheers,
Jess
