hello,
Hi there
There are so many posts on here to read and it looks as though there are a lot of girls from the UK either considering going to Oz by themselves, or have actually booked a trip which reassures me as I am planning on going in September by myself (which I haven't done before) - if I can get my arse in gear! My original plan was to travel/work over 12 months starting in Sydney then to Melbourne, Adelaide, Alice Springs, Perth, Darwin, Cairns then back to the east cost to Sydney to fly back to the UK but now I have bridesmaid duties in June 2011 (!) I think I may only squeeze six months in so I need to plan this out.
I have a friend who travelled for a year in Oz and she gave me the below hostel information where she stayed - some may not apply to what you want to do but i'll put it on here in case anyone else wants it - I may end up staying at some of these places!:
Sydney: Sydney Central YHA on or Wake Up -Sydney Central
Melbourne: Greenhouse Backpackers but it wasnt that good, my friend stayed at Urban Central and she said it was really good.
Adelaide: again at the YHA - Adelaide Central athough I found the city centre at night has a fair few aboriginals and weirdos hanging about so stuck with someone when I went out.
Alice Springs: Annies Place! This was a great little place and had a good atmosphere the food and drink was really cheap!
Perth: The Witches Hat - is just brilliant!
Cairns: Global Palace/Global Central
I have researched so many things and have a list of hostels across Australia that seem to have fairly good recommendations but my initial concern is I fly to eg Sydney, then I am there in the city on my own and not sure where to take it from here? I just wondered what other people do/are doing as this is the part that worries me slightly! I'm not sure whether to book accommodation, transport etc for my first day or whether to do one of these trips which is almost like a package deal that includes transfers from the airport to accommodation for five nights so you can get your bearings etc. As someone who would be travelling alone for the first time I like the idea but also understand it would probably cost more than if I was to arrange something myself.

Hi guys,
Im kinda in the same boat as ye, although i am a 26yr old male! Im heading off to Melbourne in Sept on me own and im not really sure how to atack it!! Im planning on booking into a hostel for a week in Melbourne so hopefully ill meet some people there. I plan to stay in Melboure for 6 weeks or so and pick up some casual work so i plan to find a short term let in the city or just hostel it for 6 weeks for the craic, then travel clockwise around Oz stoping off at Alice Springs, Cairns, Brisbane etc before going to Sydney for NY
My older bother did Oz/NZ WHV a few years back and he said not to plan to far in advance as plans change a lot depending on who you meet on the road and what you wana experience. He also said he met loads of people travelling on their own, both male and female and said he had no problems meeting people to travel with, in fact he is now married to a Taiwanese girl he met travelling
Not really sure if this helps ye but hopefully i have quashed some fo yer fears about travelling on yer own
Hiya that's really good to hear as my friend did it a few years ago and I was wondering how much it has changed since she went. I have another friend who has been in NZ for two years now after she met a guy and ended up staying there with him rather than coming back to England! Everyone keeps telling me "You must be in Sydney for New Year!" so perhaps I need to change the order of which I see places. Sydney seemed a good place to start as there are flights there from Bristol (which is nearest airport to me that flies to Oz) and there are 5-day package deals available to help you settle in etc and I quite like the idea of meeting people there who are in the same boat as me and unsure of how to get to know people etc - I don't want to be naive and just expect it to all fall into place as I am sure this is not realistic!
