If you'll go to Borneo to see the urang utans (and I guess you'll fly on Kuching), don't miss Bako National Park. It was one of my favorite NP in Malaysia.
Both Cameron Highlands and Taman Negara were a bit disappointing to me, but on the other hand I loved Georgetown/Penang!
And concerning KL, 1 or 2 days is enough to cover the main attractions...
I think one full day in KL is plenty. It's never been one of my favorite cities in Asia.
I loved the Cameron Highlands, but I'm also a fan of places with little to do but relax and stroll in the mountains. I also enjoyed touring tea plantations.
Penang is definitely my favorite place in Malaysia and I think warrants a couple days.
I love the Perhentian Islands and if it's the right time of year (I can't remember when monsoon is) than it's an great place to spend a few days or relaxing and diving.
If you have an interest in colonial history, Melaka is worth a stop for day or two.
Though it's not in Malaysia, Singapore is right there and is a more interesting city than KL in my opinion.
I loved Taman Negara, the Perhentian Islands and the Cameron Highlands. I personally wasn't that impressed with Penang as I prefer the less touristy places.
I think 2 days is enough in KL.
We went to Langkawi for 4 days, Penang for 3, Genting Highlands for two nights, (although one was enough) Kuala Lumpa for one day, the went to Cambodia for 4 days, back to Kuala Lumpur for 3 more days.
Langkawi have tours such as the mangrove forest which was very interesting, must do is the chair lifts to a very high viewing platform, also lovely beaches.
We caught a ferry to Penang.
Penang had the funicular tram ride, at the top there were temples etc to look at, we were staying in Georgetown so were central to everything.
We booked a coach to Gentings Highlands.
This is like a casino complex in the sky, it is amazing, chair lifts that go on for miles take you to the top over the rain forest, but one night would have been enough, it was cold and cloud was swirling around most of the time outside, but it is worth a vist.
I think you could see all you want in KL in two days, the Petronas towers, and the midas tower, market etc

Here are some of the highlights of .
I'd say reserve two nights for . The not-to-be-missed are the , , and KL Bird Park. Then there are others as well. For KL Tower, the public viewing area is so much higher than the Skybridge (which is free, though) at Petronas Towers. Explore in and around the Chinatown area. Oh, and the endless shopping centres around Bukit Bintang area, which is where you'd probably be staying if you're the backpackers type.
The (3-4 days) are highly recommended by many, and August is a good time of the year to visit. Other islands worth considering include (in no particular order) , and .
For : Georgetown (old colonial town, old fort, Chinese clan mansions), Kek Lok Si at Ayer Itam (a huge Buddhist temple complex), Snake temple (snakes from the nearby forest came into this temple and make it their home). This should probably take you about 2 days, depending on how slow/fast you're going. The furnicular train at Penang Hill is currently closed for upgrading, but there are jeep services or you could hike. There's a good view of one part of the island from above.
Taman Negara is highly recommended if you don't want to fly over to Malaysian Borneo. For (2-3 days), there is a tea plantation and vegetable farms. Plus, you can hire a guide to show you around the nearby jungle. There are buses from both KL and Penang if you plan this to be the next stop.
Over in Malaysian Borneo, you could do either or . For Sabah, check out (allow at least 3 or 4 days) and . If you don't fancy climbing the mountain, but still want to see the orang utan and the tribes, in Sarawak is an option too. Not too far away from the city, there's a cultural village (not sure if you could spend a night there) and a place where you can see orang utan not too (I've only heard about it - don't know if it's as good as the one in Sepilok).
