Hey people.
Hello camo200sx,
As a shanghai resident, I 'd like to give some price information to you.
The accommodation price in shanghai :
hotel price: 100~300USD/day;
apartment price: 50~100USD/day
the dinner(chinese food) price: 30USD/person
the taxi price: 2USD/5 km
all the price above is approximate based on currency USD, I suggest you 'd
change EUR to CNY (rate: 1Euro=9.3CNY)
wish you a happy trip

Thanks for the info.
Wow, it seems very expensive compared to what I read elsewhere. Basically I'm a backpacker traveling on a very low budget. Are these prices the cheapest?
Thanks
China's largest cities are not inexpensive, and as Shanghai approaches Hong Kong and Las Vegas in the good life, don't expect the low prices that you will find in rural China. However, the backpacker still has choices - look at the listings at Hostelworld and here at TP.
For much lower prices, you might consider Indochina, since you're heading in that direction to get home. $30. buys a very nice hotel room in Hanoi.
Ok Thanks for that.
Indochina is out of the question as air nz only allows stopovers in a few major citys such as Hong Kong and Shanghai. Checking Hostelworld and it seems you can get a dorm room (shared) for 5 - 10 euros which if I'm only there for 6 days isn't too bad.
Loos like food is also cheap if I were to buy it at supermarkets or food stalls on the street.
Ok, so does anyone have recommendations on what to visit in shanghai and what nearby city/town to venture to for a couple of days. I have heard Hangzhou is quite good...
Last but not least. Where in Shanghai am I best to head to do some shopping. Clothes and electronics maybe. Visiting a large electronic type market could be interesting.
Thanks
hi,
i am just back from china,
Shanghai for me was cheaper,
last time i was there the simple but clean hotel was about 300 RMB,
meal about 70 RMB, but it dep on how much you eat :D
Nice city, a lot of fun
About electronic market, the biggest one is in Shenzhen, but the all the cheapest things are in guanzhou
Cheers Tory, sounds good.
Any major sights I should check out while there?

Shanghai IS the most expensive city in China, but it doesn't have to be THAT expensive. You can get a hotel for much less than $100/day. Last time I was there, I stayed in a very nice one for about $50- and that was a single room with bathroom. Not a hostel dorm.
$30 for dinner? Where are you dining? No, $10 in most Chinese restaurants will be sufficient.
Taxis, however, ARE expensive, and Shanghai is a big city, so it really adds up.
