Hi all
Train is very easy around Belgium, and not too expensive. As a tourist, what you would want to see in Bruges and Ghent are all walkable (I actually haven't been to Ghent, but have heard its quite walkable). Brussels is mostly walkable as well for tourist things, and those things that are farther out you can take a tram or metro.
I do think it is feasible to see all three in a week, though I might switch hotels and spent a night in Bruges and Ghent, so you don't have to worry about getting back to Brussels in the evening.
Bruges is just nice to walk around and see the old architecture.
In Brussels, a walking tour of the main area will take up one day. If you like beer, check out the in town for some lambic beer. You can go and see the palace, and the euro buildings in a day. The Atomium and mini-Europe in the Heysel area (take the metro).

A beautiful city with great architecture - and incredible bars throughout.
In Brussles I'd reccomend the sleepwell hostel in the city centre. Its at a good location, clean and relatively cheap.
I'd also go to http://www.deliriumcafe.be/ if memory serves they have or at least had the world record for most types of beer in a single bar. Pretty cool place
All of those towns are a relatively short (and cheap) train ride from Brussels. I recommend staying in Brussels, and just making day trips to the other towns.
Belgium is a culture of enjoying fine beers. The best way to observe the lives of the Belgians is to find some nice cafes and sample the different types.

I would personally suggest spending more time in Bruges, I liked it way better then Brussels but then again Brussels is bigger.
