$1500 budget for 10 days in Thailand

Do you think a $1500 budget for my 10 day Thailand backpacking trip will be enough for a late Feb or early march 2011 trip? This is cash that I will use for my shopping/eating/activities/travel within Thailand. I plan on staying at hostels throughout my short stay. Also plan on eating street food, granted I will eat at restaurants but that will be very limited. What do you guys think? I plan on spending 3 days in bangkok, then taking the overnight train to chaing mai for 2 days, then flying from there to the South for some island hopping for 5 days (phi phi islands, maya bay, and monkey beach are on my must see list). I havent decided if my island base should be krabi or phuket. The main activities Im interested in doing include taking a Thai cooking class, elephant riding, maybe visiting a village up North, beaching it, shopping, and ofcourse seeing the main sites in bangkok. Im leaning on the hostel, lub d bangkok siam square in Bangkok and lub sbuy guest house in phuket. They've recd good reviews..anyone stayed there? Any hostel recommendations in Chiang Mai?

At $1500 total or $150 a day you should live pretty good! Unless this also includes airfare from your country to Thailand. At this rate you don't have to stay at crappy hostels and share toilets with 25 other people! A hotel with air, hot water, private toilet, TV and maid service will start around 600 baht in Bangkok. Smaller cities and other areas cheaper. A place that is around 1000 baht isn't too bad!

Transportation is cheap in Thailand. If you need the overhead sleeper car for the ride up to Chiang Mai get the request in as soon as you get to Thailand. That service books up pretty fast. You can book your flights and other rides after you get to Thailand. If you use a bus for long distance my recommendation is to get the ticket at a regular bus station.

How long your money lasts depends on how you manage your money. If you routinely spend lavishly you will run out. If you hand out your money to every beggar you come across you will run out. If you waste it on expensive boyfriends or girlfriends you will run out sooner.

This budget is a lot better than many backpackers take with them. If you intend to use a debit or credit card make sure you notify your bank before you leave home. Read up some of the older posts on local transportation from the Bangkok airport. When you need advice for hotels mention your price range per night. Wait until you get to Thailand to change any money over to Thai baht to get the best rate.

I don't think you will have a problem unless you always have budget problems back in your own country. You can sign up for tours (and treks in Chiang Mai) through local travel agencies. They can take your request one day and you leave the following morning or even in the afternoon/evening for some tours.

Why only 10 days? After paying for the plane ticket a few more days in Thailand is not that expensive.

Good luck.

$1500 for 10 days? that should be plenty! I'm planning on going thailand in my RTW next year, and budgeting about £600/£700 for a whole month in thailand inc. accomodation, food, travel around the country and also attractions..

Thanks for your responses guys I'm a female traveller who at this moment will be traveling alone, so that's y I thought staying at a hostel would afford me the opportunity to meet travel buddies and other happy twenty something year olds. ok, cool...I'm glad. What do u guys think about krabi or Phuket as a home base for island hopping?

unless you buy electronic devices such as cameras and cell phones it would be enough.

wow, will you take me?? If that is not including your flights to & from, you can live like a king!

I spent almost 2 months in Thailand last year and averaged $35 UD/day.
I based myself in Krabi for island hopping, I really ended up liking it there! There are a number of fun day trips from Krabi and it is a good hub for catching ferry's to Phi Phi, Koh Lanta and other islands. If you stay in Krabi, make sure to walk down by the river front to the night market for dinner - really good food!

I also traveled alone and it was pretty easy to meet people by staying in budget guesthouses. (Thailand doesn't have shared dorm type hostels as much as other places) Even though you will be able to easily afford to stay at nicer places, the budget ones are where you will meet other young travelers.

You will be able to splurge on some nice places for a couple nights on that budget...

'sheeed

150 bucks a night? you can stay at a nice western hotel for prolly 100 bucks a night, or a nice thai place for 50 bucks a night. really NICE restaurant meals wont be more than 10-15 bucks either.

1500$ for 10 days?
You will be fine, unless if you start spending money in girls-boys.......
You can stay in nice hotels and having nice food. These will be the most beautiful days of your life
