Seeking recommendations for New York-to-Florida road trip

I’m looking for recommendations on where to stop during our New York to Florida road trip next month. Particularly, I’m looking for “world’s largest” roadside attractions or other sites. For example, I’m considering the world’s largest model railroad museum in Flemington, NJ. We're going to Florida to visit family, but also to do research for our blog. "Go Big or Go Home" is a chronicle of what happens when my small-town family visits the "world’s largest"…whatever!

South of the Border is a huge tourist trap. You will start seeing signs in Virginia, easliy 300 miles away. But trust me the kids will see them too and by the time you get to southern NC you will have no choice. I can't vouch for any veggies on the menu but you may be able to score the worlds most expensive pecan log roll.

It doesn't have the 'world's largest' anything, as far as I know, but Savannah, Georgia has amazing pecan pie! Down by the river, there are some picturesque restaurants that used to be old stone warehouses, and there are many old trees dripping with Spanish moss in the squares around town.

If you take a little side trip to a small town there are almost always little diners or restaurants that you can stop in for food that also includes vegetables. These little out of the way diners are reasonably priced usually geared to working class or retired customers. If you do not know what "grits" are you will after a few breakfast meals down south US.

Even at a McDonalds you can get a salad! Cheapest salads at a McDonalds is one dollar! (These will probably be McDonalds that are not on turnpikes.) They provide the dressing and croutons too! If you have some bacon chips you pick up in a supermarket that cheap salad is not that bad. Other items on the dollar menu at all McDonalds PLUS free WiFi in most places in the US! They also have yogurt, fruit juice and some other more expensive salads also available.

Below is from above link - McDonalds. Copy and paste.

Good luck.

Patriots point Naval Museum in Charleston is an exciting venue.

Dont know about worlds largest but if you go to Florida go Daytona might be bike week depending on when your going but that must be one of the worlds largest motorcycle gathering, family friendly places would be Ripley's too, cant say about food as havent been down that way in 10 years!
Have fun!!!

We’re also looking for great family-friendly places to eat, like diners, where we have half a chance of finding vegetables on the menu.

Why wouldn't you have half a chance of seeing vegetables in southern restaurants? Never heard of collard greens and black eyed peas?

I think the poster meant veggies people actually like to eat.

Thanks for ALL the suggestions!

@Dodger; I love collard greens and beans, actually! The kids; not so much!

@karazyal -- good tip about the WiFi in McDonalds; may need it to post to the blog.

@DaveinMD -- Oh yes indeed, we will be stopping at South of the Border! Can't wait!

Say hi to Pedro for me. And be prepared for cheesy signs such as:

"Pedro's forcast: chili today, hot tamale"
