Planning a 2.5 week trip between San Fran - Yosemite and LA. Main worry is the unfamiliar driving in snow. What areas can / should we cover and avoid driving in snow during Dec 2nd and 3rd week between SF-Yosemite-LA and back to SF.
Snow is very much a hit-and-miss thing in December. This year so far we've had quite a bit of snow--and therefore the roads over the mountains (through Yosemite) are already closed. But because this is a very popular tourist attraction--and because people live in all the small cities nearby--you can count on all the main roads being open.
Since it appears you plan to go to Yosemite from Los Angeles, I would plan to spend a night just south of the park--in Fresno, and then just a short ways north--like in Murphys, Angels Camp--or Sonora. This will allow you to have a lot of time in the park during your one full day.
P.S. On your day between Santa Cruz and Big Sur, I suggest that you try to travel on the portion of the 17 mile drive (in Pebble Beach) that actually goes right along side the water. (Well, at least do so if it isn't raining). This is a drive that charges a small toll, but that is definitely worth the cost--as it is probably one of the most beautiful drives in the entire country.
Enjoy
