More than any other spot in the country, Kuala Lumpur, or "KL" as it is commonly known, is the focal point of new Malaysia.
While the city's past is still present in the evocative British colonial buildings of the Dataran Merdeka and the midnight lamps of the Petaling Street nightmarket, that past is everywhere met with insistent reminders of KL's present and future.
Both Penang and Malacca are good for food and colonial history, you should go both.
If you want luxury beach, it is either Four Season or Tanjung Rhu on Langkawi, or the renounce Pangkor Laut Resort at Pangkor. If you want not luxury but beautiful beach, then Redang/Perhentian/Lang Tengah Islands are the place to go.
Malaysia was the surprise hit of my SE Asia trip last year, you have made a good choice.
I loved KL and you could easily spend more than 3 days there. Go to Jalan Alor - the chinese food street, and go to the 2nd place on the right (with red chairs) and order the Dry Chili Chicken. And don't miss a walk to the Petronis Towers at night. I don't know what your budget is like, but I loved the Back Home Hostel in KL. They have both dorms and private rooms. And when you can't eat any more rice, go to Bermuda & Onion for a great Italian meal.
I spent a few days in Melaka and really enjoyed it, so it's hard to say that if you are pressed for time, it is the thing I would cut out.
I did not go to Tamen Negra, but I did go to the Cameron Highlands, which were beautiful and definitely worth it, not boring at all. (I'd be interested to hear from someone who has been to both if they are similar) It was my "nature fix" for Malaysia!
I'd recommend the Prehentian Islands because they are beautiful and I really enjoyed my stay there, but I don't think there is anyplace that would qualify as "luxury"! I didn't go to Langkawi, but I did hear the beer was cheaper there than anywhere else in Malaysia...
Georgetown is interesting and if you are going to Langkawi it makes sense to go. There is a lot of history there and some mighty good food. Go to the hawker stalls at the Red Garden for a dinner - if you are lucky it will be karaoke or maybe even ballroom dancing night! Take a walk through the old British cemetery. Have tea or cocktails and the E&O.
Oh, and bus travel is inexpensive, easy and comfortable in Malaysia

I go travelling on Saturday, and I am starting in Malaysia. I was wondering if anybody had been to Pulau Pangkor island before?
I have read about it in my Rough Guides book, but there is really limited information about it. Does anybody know if its worth a trip or should we just wait until we get to Langkawi for a beach fix?

I am also going to Malaysia in September with my wife and we are thinking of starting in KL and heading south to Johor and then nipping over to Singapore for a day or 2 as we have friends there. Anyone on here a Malaysia expert who know the best places to go? Malaysia doesn't seem to be mentioned on here much.

If it's Malaysia check out Genting Highlands see the Outdoor & Indoor Theme Park.The Roller Coaster was brilliant.And off course, KL is definitely gorgeous at night , especially the Petronas Towers.
For Singapore visit Malacca.Also there's a lot of shopping we did there in Singapore.One place i really liked was Universal Studios , the set ups were incredible.Check out Sentosa Island and Dolphin Lagoon.We had a great time on our holiday last year with coxnkings. I'd come with my family here.Have a great time when your going!
Hello there all Malaysia's lovers,
My first advice is to check the whether before coming, especially if you're planning to visit islands. The rain can be really bad sometimes, but if you're a nature lover you'll enjoy it. Get more info from Malaysian tourism board, they usually provides the latest info and the best deals for tourists.
If you're prefer a simple and a more economical travelling mode, I'll be happy to help especially in term of transportation, coz I travel a lot locally myself. Cannot advise you on the best place though, since it all depends on your own taste.
