I am getting married in May of next year. We are wanting to go to Europe (either early summer or fall) for a few weeks and plan to start in Paris and probably end in Rome. The only real prerequisites are Paris, Venice, and either lake Como or Garda. Earlier this year we spent 6 days in Tuscany and 3 in Rome and we were able to really get a lot in (Florence, Sorrento, Cinqua terra, Sienna, Pompeii, Pisa, Volterra, and a few more), but we missed a few things like Venice and we would like to do one more day in Rome at the end. We will be traveling by rail, but I keep looking at all the options and wanted to get some feedback. Depending on which direction we would go, what are some suggestions? I have been looking at stopping in Lyon by going the southern route and if we go east instead, stopping in Strasbourg and maybe somewhere in Switzerland. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
Congratulations on your impending wedding!
Just to tell you of my experience in Strasbourg: I found the people very cold and rude - even to the point of denying they spoke French, English or German in a shop when I was trying to ask how much something cost. This made my trip a fairly dismal one and I would not go back despite the fact I found the city to be absolutely gorgeous. The old town is breathtaking and charming and the politcal buildings and shopping areas were wonderful. On the back of my experience I would say 'go Lyon' but do note that I have never met anyone else who has been to know if my experience was typical or a one off!
I hope whatever route you pick you have a fantastic time!
I've been to Strasbourg, I didn't find the people cold and rude but then I don't think we went into any shops. It is a really beautiful city Lyon is also beautiful, but I found that once you were out of the old town part it was quite dirty and run down - I think I preferred Strasbourg. But they are both lovely!
