I personally like sites that show a bunch of different hotels. If I can book easily enough through those, I'll do that, but sometimes I'll end up on the hotel's own site. Bookings through those can be painful though (sometimes it requires just emailing them a contact form, or calling them)...
i normally check the booking sites for the best deals and then cross check it directly against the hotel/hostel own site and price wise there isn't always a difference but sometimes the booking site will have it for a little cheaper, the clause is normally on cancelations.....the advantage of the booking sites is also simply having a map of the city/ area with multiple hotels/hostels and prices on one site
Rraven, sounds like it takes a lot of time to cross check every deal. how do you find the official sites? google each one?

A hotel can charge one customer a room for £50 another customer £60 and another £70 for the same room, just depends on who you speak to or who you book with.
A good bet would be to explore a few sites out first and make a comparison on the sites.
Also check the terms and conditions just to be on the safe side.
If my time is limited (which it usually is), I use whatever site I find first. I tend to start with sites that search many hotels (such as HostelWorld.com), and go from there. Another benefit of these sights is that they typically contain reviews that the hotel can't remove.
So, to answer your question, I don't think it's bad to book directly through a hotel's website. That being said, there may be better options.
I just land and ask a cab to take me to the nearest 1* or 2* hotel. That way - if my flight is delayed and I haven't booked a room in advance - I haven't lost any payment either. I gave up booking rooms in advance years ago. No problem so far - despite just turning up in dozens of different countries day and night with no reservation.
Incidentally, if my flight arrives at (say) 02:00, I'll get my head down at the airport after a drink or two, till about 09:00 - then start my search. There's no way I'm buying a bed for the night at that time. Total waste of money.
While there is a growing abundance of options when it comes to booking a vacation home, once you arrive, you'll want to enjoy concierge services to help you get reservations at that trendy hotels.
I agree with AlexSandor: the sites that have many hotels/hostels are better. That way you can compare prices easily, and read honest reviews of the hotels. And you can book hotels in several cities along your route, easily.
It's definitely a good idea to book ahead, if you are sure of your itinerary. I've checked into several hostels where, if I hadn't booked ahead, I wouldn't have had a room. Then you waste time and money looking around for another cheap hotel/hostel. And the deposit on a hostel room is so small (only a few bucks), that if you somehow don't make it there, and lose your deposit, it's no big deal.
