We are planning a 3-4 week to Italy in Sept. 2011 and are trying to decide if we should try to do a house swap (we trade our home in the US for a central home base in Italy) or just stay in hotels. The advantage of a house swap is that there is no cost to stay in the destination house. The only cost would be for hotels in destinations that are more than a days journey from the home base.
I can't imagine hotels ever working out cheaper than a house swap to be honest. The simple fact that your house at home is not just being an expense would make a huge difference.
The only alternative that I can think of is maybe renting out your house on a short term rental site - something like homeaway, vrbo, airbnb, etc. and then you can use that money to stay whereever you want. Basically achieves the same thing, but might give you more flexibility. Downside is it might be more hassle to be renting out your house like that than a houseswap.
Never done either of these myself, so these are just observations from outside
