Hello ,
With trips to Australia depending on the airline, it is normally possible to get open jaw tickets so for example go London - Dubai - Melbourne then overland Perth - Dubai - London. That means you could cross the whole country and not need to backtrack. That would be on Emirates. The same would be possible on Singapore Airlines only you'd need to use Singapore as the transit point along the way. You could do the same for Qantas via Singapore, Bangkok or Hong Kong.
If you plan to do the trip right across Australia, it is certainly better to book the flights across from Melbourne or Sydney to Perth well before you turn up because last minute flights can be extremely expensive compared to if you book a fair way out especially on a weekend or in peak travel times.
If you want to see the "real Australia" you should take in the Northern Territory and Kimberly and Pilbara region of North Western Australia. To do those it is definitely best to do on some tour and not do on your own. I think unless you plan to just stick to the capital cities where it is easy to get flights like Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Hobart, Adelaide, Perth and Darwin, it would be better to do some sort of adventurous tour at your age on such a short visit. If you just wanted to get a taste of the main cities then that would be easily achievable by yourself without a need to go on a tour. Any places in the outback i.e. the real Australia are hard to get to without expensive flights on Qantas Link or having your own 4WD as hiring one and paying the one way drop off fee is extremely expensive.
